Job Description Summary
As part of the press crew, performs and works with other team members on all duties required to operate the web presses. This includes webbing, plate-up, color/gray balance, supplying newsprint, cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
Change RTP-reel assemblies as necessary to the size of newsprint rolls as needed for the job layout.
Prepares rolls for paster splices by removing the wrap and checking for any damaged areas. Applies correct paster pattern using make-up tape and correct positioning of the surface mark sensor tape.
Engages all RTP control panels assigned in the line-up. Monitors the splice process and makes adjustments as necessary for completion of the paster cycle.
Places expired cores and stripped waste in the proper containers. Maintains a clean, orderly and safe work area. Assures environmental compliance.
When sending up a web, ensure lead is running through floor pipes correctly and feeds in the roll as the web is guided through the floorplate. Assists with webbing up the press through the superstructure and into the folder.
Removes and installs plates securely on the cylinder in correct page positions determined by the layout.
Inspects paper for correct section/page/date sequences, color register and clean images.
Performs post run clean-up, cleaning blankets, dumping old plates, pick up rags and stores pans at the blanket wash station.
Assists with press malfunctions and coordinates with the Service Shops. Reports any equipment issues to the Operator and Supervision.
Must be able to lift 65 lbs.

Must be able to work while sitting, standing or walking for 8 hours per day
Typically, successful completion of the L.A. Times Apprentice program or 5 years previous newspaper printing experience.
