Job Summary

This is an entry level role with focus on training on and assisting with operating Electrical Discharge Machine (EDM) machines to modify products, either purchased or manufactured by Zimmer Biomet.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

General EDM Functions:

  • Observe EDM Worker performing transactions in JDE, DARS, and Respective Log Books and assist as directed by trainer.

  • Transfer work in process goods to other departments/areas.

  • Assist in performing and recording In-process Inspection using basic measurement devices and Comparator overlays. Use Micrometers, Calipers, Drop Gauges and various go/no-go gauges to measure and inspect product.

  • Follow & Maintain production plan schedule otherwise specified by Supervisor/Team lead. Maintain a safe and clean work area including machines to perform EDM operations.

Set Up EDM Wire/RAM/Hole Drill Machines:

  • Observe EDM Worker performing the following responsibilities, and assist in operations when trained.

  • Use Dial indicators and gauges to align product and fixtures.

  • Use tether control to maneuver EDM machine.

  • Acquire and understand operational OS Specifications & Blueprints for setup process.

Maintain Equipment:

  • Assist EDM Worker in completing in-process equipment inspections per Trouble Shoot Visual Aids.

Maintain equipment cleanliness as per 5S standards/Schedule.


  • Assist EDM Worker in performing graphite electrode cleaning using a surface grinder.

  • Assist with cleaning interior tank basin, including removing remnants, by shift.

Expected Areas of Competence

  • To put health, safety and quality first. Put forward a behavior appropriate and conducive to a healthy and safe work environment.

  • Follow approved standard operating procedures & safety procedures while:

    • Working with standard measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and scales in both metric and English system.

    • Working with and around Hazardous process materials.

    • Using some power tools and light machining equipment.

  • CNC or Conventional Machining Skills preferred.

  • Ability to read and understand all aspects of Device blue prints.

  • Ability to use and understand Micrometers, Calipers, Drop Gauges and various go/no-go gauges.

  • Previous production experience preferred.

  • Must be able to pass all tests

Education/Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Machine Shop math or better is a plus

  • Blue Print Reading education or relative work experience with blue prints is preferred

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for long durations.

  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to read and write English language in order to take and pass both a practical and written examination covering applicable procedures.

  • Must be able to perform intricate detailed work on a repetitive basis.

  • Able to use precision measuring equipment as necessary to perform inspections
