Position Summary Assist physician and nurses in providing specific treatments and procedures, and facilitating efficient patient care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
Assist physicians and/or registered nurses by taking and recording patient histories, height, weight, vital signs.
Prepares patient for examination by preparing for various specimen collections.
Administers oral and injectable (intramuscular and subcutaneous) as prescribed by the physician. Competency must be demonstrated to a registered nurse prior to performing such function. Have good knowledge of medications.
Hangs intravenous solutions without additives, monitors infusion rates, and discontinues peripheral intravenous lines.
Assists with specialized diagnostic and treatment procedures such as setting up and working with physicians to perform uvulectomy, breast needle biopsy, colorectal biopsies and procedures. Removes "16-24 hour esophageal pH monitoring" tubing and collects pH Diary as directed.
Explains tests and procedures to patient.
Retrieves lab results and surgical path reports from computer (as well as reference labs) and communicates results/ data to physician and/or registered nurse. Also, files reports in chart. Notifies reference labs for specimen pick-up. Orders lab supplies as directed by registered nurse. Keeps up with changes in where specimens for different insurance company plans are sent by communicating with GW laboratory, Insurance companies, business office, secretary, etc.
Performs sterilization of instruments as necessary and ensures valid expiration date. . Maintains packaged sets as appropriate.
Reviews progress notes in patient's chart to prepare for clinic visit. Prepares forms for use during patient visit. Enters appropriate information in chart. Completes various forms as required and reviews for accuracy and completeness.
Schedules patient appointments for radiology (including CT-scan, MRI, ultrasound), Cytopathology (fine needle aspiration), vascular lab, etc. Completes appropriate forms, gives patient instruction and forms, and records information inpatients chart. Schedules patient for follow-up appointment as needed.
Answers the telephone and transfers calls to appropriate personnel.
Patient calls- obtains pertinent information from patient, presents to physician/ registered nurse for decision.
Remove sutures and staples as requested by physician. Competency must be demonstrated to a physician prior to performing such function.
Performs simple and complex wound care, including irrigations and clean and sterile dressing changes. Able to remove and repack deep wound dressings as directed by physician.
Able to apply Unna Boot under supervision of registered nurse
Provides a clean environment for clinic and provides for inventory and proper care of equipment.
Takes inventory of supplies, equipment and medication. Responsible for ordering and seeing that necessary supplies/equipment are available and/or in proper working order for clinic.
Maintains and improves knowledge and expertise through continuing training, to include CPR certification.
Other Related Duties
Monitoring patients as they schedule tests.
Knows & applies sterile technique to a variety situations.
Ability to steam sterilizes instruments/packs, follows up to assure they are redone on a monthly basis if expired.
Ability to clean a variety of instruments and cold sterilize with cidex.
Ability to keep correct type of instruments in different exam rooms.
Must know which instruments are used for different divisions, ENT, plastic surgery, colorectal, vascular surgery.
Must be flexible in juggling several different small clinics in one day.
Takes initiative in stocking a variety of exam rooms.
Orders supplies on a weekly basis or as needed. Ensures the order arrives and accounts, monitors for back-ordered item.
May be involved with assisting new medical students, interns, and others about the clinic and working area.
Ability to draw up correct drug medication for physician and have the ability to administer IM, Sub Q.

Education High school graduation, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is necessary. Must have received formal training in medical assisting from a vocational-technical high school, post-secondary vocational schools, or community and junior college and have proof of such training, such as a certificate or diploma. A current Licensure as a Practical Nurse is acceptable.
Experience 1-2 years working experience as a Medical Assistant in general surgery/ambulatory care is necessary.
Competencies Ability to input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner. Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations. Must be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people.
Supervision Received Close supervision is received on a daily basis from a physician or Registered Nurse, or other in conjunction with nursing staff.
