Scientist

Summary:  Conceive, plan and conduct laboratory research aimed at discovery of new materials, processes and improved technology in support of Ferro’s growth in various businesses.

Essential Responsibilities: 


  • Perform long and short range planning of assigned projects.

  • Act as a technical lead in assigned projects and work collaboratively with associates.

  • Work collaboratively in other research projects (lead by other associates) and provide physics based analysis and insight.

  • Initiate new projects in Independence R&D labs with realistic technical relevance to Ferro.

  • Continually contribute to Ferro’s IP – both patent applications as well as generating trade secrets.

  • Act as lead scientist in characterization of materials through SEM/EDAX or XRD..

  • Recommend new analytical equipment and develop techniques for materials characterization.

  • Follows all laboratory and safety procedures

    Required Qualifications:





  • Graduate degree (MS or Ph.D.) in Materials Science/Engineering or chemistry or equivalent scientific field

  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial/academic R&D experience or equivalent, with proven record of sustained contribution in one or more fields of chemistry, materials science, thick film pastes, rheology or formulations development.

  • Experience in thick film screen printable pastes formulations and/or glass materials development is a plus

  • Proven track record of taking projects to completion through industrial or academic projects.

  • Hands on experience (through related projects) in operating advanced characterization tools such as SEM/EDAX, TEM, XRD or Auger Spectroscopy or ellipsometer or high frequency devices


  • Troubleshooting and fixing advanced characterization tools will be a plus

  • Work experience in products scale up will be a plus

  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and report writing/editing skills


  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in a team environment

  • Ability to interact with employees at all levels of the organization


  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • Self-motivated and curious to learn new things

    Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:   This position shall maintain compliance with all Federal, State and Local Environmental, Health & Safety Regulations, at all times.  The employee in this position shall maintain compliance with all Ferro Safety Standards as well as EHS rules/requirements of the site at all times.
