Operate equipment used for applying concrete, asphalt, or other materials to road beds, parking lots, and taxiways, or equipment used for tamping gravel, dirt, or other materials. Includes concrete and asphalt paving machine operators, form tampers, tamping machine operators, and stone spreader operators.  May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.  May assist other craft workers.This work is conducted under direction of the Construction Manager by performing the following duties

Essetial Duties and Responsibilites

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate machines to spread, smooth, level, or steel-reinforce stone, concrete, or asphalt on road beds.

  • Observe distribution of paving material to adjust machine settings or material flow, and indicate low spots for workers to add material.

  • Control traffic.

  • Light burners or start heating units of machines, and regulate screed temperatures and asphalt flow rates.

  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair equipment, using mechanics' hand tools, or report malfunctions to supervisors.

  • Operate tamping machines or manually roll surfaces to compact earth fills, foundation forms, and finished road materials, according to grade specifications.

  • Start machine, engage clutch, and push and move levers to guide machine along forms or guidelines and to control the operation of machine attachments.

  • Fill tanks, hoppers, or machines with paving materials.

  • Set up and tear down equipment.

  • Coordinate truck dumping

  • Learn and follow safety regulations.

  • Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.

  • Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met.

  • Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, crawler tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, or related equipment.

  • Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.

  • Read plans, instructions, or specifications to determine work activities.

  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where paving work will be performed.

  • Load, unload, or identify building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications.

  • Engage in good work procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety

  • Complete work to ensure conformance to specifications, standards, and contract requirements

  • Maintain and clean tools, equipment, or materials to ensure items are in usable condition.

  • Listen to supervisory personnel, contractors, or design professionals to discuss and resolve matters, such as work procedures, complaints, or construction problems

  • Participate in company safety rules, safety meetings and in tool box talks

  • Requires daytime, nighttime & some weekend hours. Travel will be required inside the company’s operational area.

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual.

  • Strict adherence to Dolomite policies and procedures as outlined in the Safety Handbook.

  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license     

Personal Protective Equipment

Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.  Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to: Fall Protection, Gloves, Hard Hat, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout/Tagout, Safety (hard toe) Shoes.


Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations, using some combination of skills and abilities.

A strong commitment to safety and adherence to applicable federal, state and local regulations is a must.

Education and/or Experience

A high school diploma or GED required.   Experience as an equipment operator in the paving industry.  Certificated or training in a Heavy Equipment program a plus

Physical Demands

Walking several miles per day, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and traveling over irregular terrain.  Some tasks involve:  prolonged periods of standing, and/or exposure to noise or weather, good motor coordinatination, finder dexterity, and color discrimiation.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include  close vision, peripheral vision, depthy perception, and the ability to adjust foucs.  Cabable of lifting heavy objects and equipmennt up to 50lbs.  All essentional duties must be performed without posign a direct threat to their own, or others, health and safety, with our without the use of a reasonable accomodation.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
