Primary Role


Overall accountability for the timely accurate processing of financial information within the Accounting Department and deliver quality financial related information for multiple subsidiaries of American Water. Provide reporting information to Corporate Finance and Divisional Departments in compliance with US GAAP, regulatory practices and company policy and procedures. Support initiatives of Divisional CFO’s including financial planning, business development evaluation, and providing inputs into and analysis of rate design at the Divisional level.




Key Accountabilities



  • Accountable for the accurate, complete and timely delivery of the GL of the assigned subsidiaries by overseeing and reviewing preparation of timely and accurate financial statements. Accountable for quality of schedules and reports in compliance with US GAAP, Regulatory, AWW internal controls, and company policies and procedures.

  • Oversee the monthly and annual closing process to ensure accuracy. Interface with Divisional CFO/Regulatory/Internal reporting to ensure compliance with cross-team accountabilities responsible for maintaining processes standardization and delivering quality financial statements. Interface and support the Divisional CFO subsidiaries operational and functional teams as required.

  • Responsible for the completion of internal and external audit activities in coordination with Assistant Controller and other business teams as required.

  • Direct implementation on company policy and procedures necessitated by GAAP, Regulatory or company mandate through partnering with appropriate business teams.

  • Identify strategies to control cost through business process improvement.

  • Provide oversight to annual subsidiary financial reporting and support quarterly/annual external reporting efforts.

  • Knowledge of OSHA, Federal, State and Local regulations as applicable utilities, construction and related industries.

Knowledge


Required Knowledge:


  • Knowledge of and familiarity with health and safety program management and OSHA regulatory requirements for construction and general industry with increased opportunities to apply expertise across disciplines or organizational areas.

  • Familiarity with safety systems development and implementation

Desirable Knowledge:


  • Utility industry knowledge

  • Water industry knowledge a plus

  • Forward looking health and safety trends



Experience/Education



  • 10 years prior accounting/finance related job experience required. Including experience with full cycle accounting processes.

  • Four (4) years supervisory experience or equivalent required. Demonstrated experience in managing and coaching direct reports and establishing career development plans by identifying development goals, milestones and measures.

  • 4 year Bachelor degree in Accounting; CPA or MBA preferred.
