The Office of Laboratory Animal Care (OLAC) ensures the health and wellbeing of animals used for research and teaching through the provision of veterinary care and oversight, animal husbandry (if not done by the PI), research support services, and training. In addition, OLAC is in charge of animal purchases and acquisition, husbandry and veterinary care, animal shipping, pharmacy and animal supply purchases, and accessing animal facilities.
Although the day-to-day assignment of space rests with OLAC, overall space needs and allocations fall under the purview of the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) with input from a faculty advisory committee, the Committee on Animal Research Space Assignment (CARSA).
* Provides quality medical and surgical care to a variety of instructional and research animals.
* Performs animal physical examinations, gross necropsies, interprets clinical laboratory data and discusses the results with the appropriate investigators and/or staff.
* Participates in after hours, weekend and holiday veterinary coverage rotation.
* Provides supportive research services through guidance, advice and consultation with investigators, faculty, students and technical personnel in the proper conduct of research and the appropriate environments, housing, care and techniques associated with the research.
* Evaluates assigned Animal Use Protocols (AUP) and provides assessment to Animal Care and Use Committee.
* Provides training as requested by supervisor for all levels of UCB staff, visiting veterinary students and Post-doctoral residents from other institutions.
* Maintains professional organization memberships, attends meetings regularly in Veterinary, Laboratory Animal Medicine, Primatology, Herpetological and related fields at local, national and international societies and organizations.
* Accompanies external and internal regulatory authorities on site-visits and inspections of the facilities and program.
* Assists investigators in the development of AUPs that comply with campus, federal and state regulations.
* Ability to carry out range of responsibilities with only general direction.
* Requires thorough knowledge of biology and care of commonly used laboratory animal species, diseases of research interest and/or concern, Knowledge of experimental surgical techniques and post-surgical care and experimental methods.
* Thorough knowledge of related veterinary medical sciences such as pathology, parasitology, immunology and toxicology and/or other fields of veterinary science as required.
* Thorough knowledge overseeing care of a variety of traditional and non-traditional research animals in both captive and field situations, including birds, ectotherms, wild rodents and other non-domesticated animals.
* Requires effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively and provide coaching and training to staff.
* Must be computer literate; skills must support medical applications (for example, electronic medical records & retrieval).
* Ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff; technical, students, faculty and administrators.
* Skills to function as a clinical resource to staff and assist with complicated issues.
* Graduate of a School of Veterinary Medicine that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Licenses or certifications, if any:
* State of California veterinary medical license.
* 3-5 years of experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian
* Board certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine preferred.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
