JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE
The Technology Transfer Specialist will optimize, stabilize and transfer new products and processes to Operations in coordination with the Materion Technology & Innovation team. Utilizing the Stage Gate process, this position will further provide engineering support in the areas of new product and process development, troubleshooting, cost improvement, and product quality improvement. The position will also research and propose new equipment, procedures, and methods to automate, improve, and/or scale-up existing processes.
This role will handle projects at various Advanced Materials locations with travel >50%.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Process & Product Development
Perform metal manufacturing processes employing techniques appropriate to the task to maintain or improve the Company's competitive market position. Duties may include utilizing a broad range of equipment currently used in Development or Manufacturing in order to support develop, optimize or refine the process. Examples include but not limited to vacuum casting, hot and cold rolling, target bonding, machining, finishing, chemical synthesis, chemical cleaning, etc.
Scale and validate new product processes in conjunction with the R&D team and operations. Act as a liaison or project manager coordinating between T&I and operations to transition the products or processes into regular production.
For new development projects, conduct experiments, perform analytical characterization activities, gather data, analyze data, establish material property relationships, draw conclusions, and document concise technical reports with clear recommendations.
Apply solid scientific understanding to the innovation and development of novel materials and processes. Drive analytical data gathering and processing for data-based decision making.
Ensure any sub-contract vendors are appropriately evaluated and selected.
Support continuous improvement. Apply solid scientific understanding to the innovation and development of novel materials and processes especially relating to metal product manufacturing.
For approved Product Development follow the Stage-Gate development process. Ensure as part of the design iteration loop, failure analysis of development products and re-design are routinely performed.
Make recommendations for capital equipment purchase. Evaluate metal processes and identify risk areas. Understand liabilities, yield, environmental and health & safety.
Sales and Marketing Support
Support AMG Sales and Marketing in new product development.
Provide technical reports to customers for new qualifications and on-going technical analyses.
Working with Supply Chain Team ensure that material flow is maintained in the most effective manner in accordance with ISO 9001 documented procedures e.g. RFQ detail, Purchase Requisition etc.
In conjunction with Purchasing ensure Raw Material specifications are clear and concise so development can be supported effectively.
Provide the necessary support to Logistics in terms of ensuring MRP correctively reflects accurate material master data for development materials.
Provide engineering support for all internal and external vendor process issues related to active R&D Projects.
Work with Process Engineering and Operations with guidance from the T&I Technical Lead to scale, train and successfully transition new product development projects to operations, using the Stage Gate Process.
Support Process Engineering to identify, design, specify and drive innovative processing techniques for existing product improvement and new product development.
Quality & Safety System
Comply with all site specific and companywide safety programs, trainings, and policies.
Adhere to ISO 9001 procedures. Ensure all approved projects are documented and recorded in a Project History File.
Ensure all procedures are formally documented and approved for use within the guidelines of the company's quality system.
Ensure that safety and process hazard reviews are conducted for new or modified equipment and procedures.
Provide operation support to identify improvements, route cause investigations, and proactively encourage a safety culture particularly for chemical handling and usage.
Write and refine work instructions for new products and processes to transition to Operations.
Train new technicians and operators on new product processes and specifics to ensure a successful transition of the product or process into operations.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science or equivalent experience required.
6+ years' R&D experience with focus on new product development.
Experience in scale up in material manufacturing and successfully transitioning new product or process projects into production, preferred.
Experience in metal or chemical manufacturing environment, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong analytical skills and deep process orientation
Experience in developing various process documentation (SOP, WI, etc.)
Ability to communicate effectively to facilitate group processes and training
Good use of computer and Office suite of programs
Ability to operate various tools and equipment associated with metal and chemical manufacturing processes, including laboratory testers, microscopes, various hand and machine tools, furnaces, vacuum pumps, etc.
Design of experiments and Six Sigma experience
Experience in SAP
A good understanding of metal properties, and metal alloying.
