SUMMARY

The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch (AFHSB) is the central epidemiologic resource for the U.S. Armed Forces, conducting medical surveillance to protect those who serve our nation in uniform and allies who are critical to our national security interests. We are seeking a highly talented Junior-level GIS Developer/analyst to assist the Integrated Biosurveillance Section in the oversight and implementation of systems designed to track health events and disease outbreaks that could affect DoD assets throughout the world.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Design, development and maintenance of GIS products in order to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot problems within applications

  • Make recommendations to staff from results of analyses on how to improve the management and use of GIS related products and systems.

  • Collaborate with data scientists who are performing advanced statistical analyses.

  • Work with senior management to ensure project goals are established and met within an appropriate timeline.

  • Ensure software / hardware is up-to-date using cost-effective strategies.

  • Collaborate on presentations, posters, and publications.

  • Perform other duties as requested

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY


  • None

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE


  • Bachelors or Masters Degree (i.e. Geographic Information Systems, Social Science, Public Health or closely related field),

  • 1-3 years of experience developing custom GIS tools and applications including:

  • Familiarity with ESRI suite of software (ArcGIS Map, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server ArcGISPortal, ArcGIS Online)

  • Familiarity with coding Languages: Python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, C#, .NET

  • Understanding of vector and raster GIS data types

  • Ability to create and modify geographic data from a variety of source such as text files

  • Ability to translate or convert data from external GIS file types,


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


  • Motivated self-starter, able to multi-task to meet deadlines


  • Team player who collaborates well with professionals,

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, to provide verbal briefings and make clear presentations to senior leadership, as well as colleagues, regarding GIS program activities

  • Secret-level clearance or ability to obtain one.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Climate-controlled office during normal business hours.
