Department Overview

The Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery is one of the largest divisions within the Department of Surgery, comprised of a team of 17 dedicated faculty in support of OHSU as a Level 1 trauma center. Our trauma surgeons provide expert care to the most seriously injured patients in the state, instruct future generations of trauma surgeons, and conduct research into improving and advancing the treatment of trauma patients. Its surgical critical care fellowship program sponsors four fellows each year.

Function/Duties of Position

The Department of Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University is seeking a senior scientist who can lead the basic science efforts in the lab. This position seeks an individual to work in the area of trauma and critical care research. The research group is funded by the NIH, Department of Defense and private industry to conduct cutting-edge research in the areas of resuscitation and transfusion in trauma, stem cell therapies in trauma and critical care medicine, novel blood product development, and hemostatic devices in pre-clinical and clinical studies. The lab is focused on investigating at the pre-clinical level, the therapeutic potential of novel therapies in trauma related applications. Utilizing pre-clinical animal and cell models of injury this position entails the study of novel therapies for the prevention of hemorrhagic shock induced organ failure, dysfunctional inflammation, coagulopathy, and endothelial dysfunction in trauma.

The Senior Research Assistant will participate in the planning, organization and execution of these studies. The Senior Research Assistant will be responsible for writing and submitting papers and grants with the group.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with major courses in field of research and 1 to 3 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular and cell biology
  • Leadership, independent thinking, creativity, and organizational skills


Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or MD in biological sciences with an emphasis on molecular and cell biology
  • Advanced experience in animal models of disease, cell culture and cell biology, tissue staining, microscopic imaging and analysis
  • Experience with Western Blotting, RNA and DNA work, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry
