JOB SUMMARY:

The Fire Safety Officer I (NFPA Firefighter II) protects life and property by providing Fire & Emergency Medical Services response including, but not limited to fire suppression, emergency medical care, hazardous materials, technical rescue, fire and injury prevention and educational programs. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

50% - Essential - Emergency Response
Responsible for responding to scenes of fires, disasters or other emergency incidents; protecting life and property through controlling, extinguishing and preventing fires; provides emergency medical services; responds to manmade and natural disasters. In emergency situations, performs hazardous tasks requiring strenuous physical exertion for extended periods of time. Delivers safe medical care and treatment based on the individual needs of the patient and in accordance with medical protocols and department policies and procedures.

35% - Essential - Administrative
Actively conducts occupancy pre-incident plans, performs fire prevention, public education, and public relations activities while projecting a professional public image. Accurately completes electronic forms, incident reports, and other documentation as required. Maintains compliance with required OSHA Programs to include Fire Brigade Clearance, Respiratory Protection, Exposure Control Program. Maintains EMS certification and maintains medical control sponsorship/authorization.

15% - Essential - Supervisory
Work is performed under the direction of a commanding officer but the individual must take initiative and exercise independent judgment in emergency situations. This position has no supervisory responsibilities, however may require giving assignments and/or directions to to co-workers or members of the public during emergency operations per NIMS-ICS as a resource leader or team member; May serve as Initial Incident Commander until relieved as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - High School Diploma or Equivalent

Experience - 12 consecutive months of firefighting and/or EMS field experience

Licenses - Drivers License Class D normal < 26,000; Current NREMT & SC EMT certification, NFPA Firefighter I, OSHA Hazardous Materials Operations, Confined Space Rescue Operations, NIMS-ICS 200, and the ability to maintain continuous medical control sponsorship/authorization by the department.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Associate's Degree - Fire Science, Emergency Services, or other related field

Experience - 1+ years of full time paid firefighter experience and/or 1+ year of full time paid Advanced EMT or Paramedic experience. Volunteer experience may be substituted if greater than 3 years of directly related service time.

Licenses - Current NREMT & SC Paramedic Certification, NFPA Firefighter II, OSHA Hazardous Materials Technician, Confined Space Rescue Technician certification, and SC Class "E" Drivers License.

No Supervisory Duties - Not responsible for supervising employees.

No Budget Responsibilities - No fiscal responsibility for the department's budget.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Associate's Degree - Fire Science, Emergency Services, or other related field

Experience - 1+ years of full time paid firefighter experience and/or 1+ year of full time paid Advanced EMT or Paramedic experience. Volunteer experience may be substituted if greater than 3 years of directly related service time.
