Position Summary: Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, and taking into consideration the age and developmental needs of the patient, the Clinical Nursing Extern participates in delivering care to patients and their families. The role is intended to provide an opportunity for the CNE to develop the foundation for critical thinking as it relates to the implementation of the nursing process. The Clinical Nursing Extern performs routine patient activities and delegated patient care procedures of a specialized and technical nature which includes observing and monitoring patient condition, identifying changes in collected patient data and notifying the nurse, setting up and maintaining specialized clinical equipment, knowledge of aseptic technique, collecting blood specimens, and performing related, delegated nursing procedures. Duties and responsibilities include activities required in daily practice as defined by each ASC. The extent of participation is based on the student s ability to demonstrate competence in delegated functions.

Competencies:

Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited associate or baccalaureate degree school of nursing. Has completed all fundamental nursing course requirements.

Knowledge: Knowledge of nursing process and basic nursing skills.

Skills: Demonstrated ability to analyze data to synthesize and summarize information and make judgments regarding patient care. Ability to document legibly using a writing instrument. Ability to use computer keyboard functions to input and obtain data. Demonstrated skills in performing routine patient care activities.

Achievement of a passing grade in an approved nursing fundamentals course.
