Job Description:

We are looking for a detail-oriented Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to lead all facets of the automated test infrastructure for Caliber Public Safety’s 24/7 mission-critical public safety software suite.

As the Software Engineer in Test you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and execution of automated performance and stress testing of production software to ensure stability and reliability. Development is done primarily on a Java microservice architecture, with components utilizing web technologies, Eclipse RCP/SWT, and C#.

Some critical skills you will have are: the ability to develop and execute test plans and test scripts, programming, and database & system administration capabilities needed to manage the integrity of the test environments and test repositories.

What your impact will be:

  • Designs and develops quality testing procedures; updates and modifies existing tests as necessary. You will have a key role in deciding which automated testing tools to use and how to best use them. 

  • Defines test objectives and writes test cases.  Provides guidance on test cases for less senior staff and makes recommendations for improvement.

  • Performs moderately complex functional, application, regression and performance tests, with a special focus on automating regression, performance, and stress-testing.  Identifies testing environment needs for projects and coordinates the establishment of the environments.

  • Plans and implements automated testing that replicates or approximates real-world usage and failure modes. Captures metrics on real-world usage and participates in troubleshooting of issues in production environments so as to improve testing procedures.

  • Performs initial analysis and troubleshooting of test failures and suggests possible solutions. Able to interpret application log files, exception traces, and application source code to zero-in on defect root cause and propose solutions: Black-box and white-box testing.

  • Estimates, plans, schedules, and implements testing projects.  Responsible for the test automation for multiple complex projects.  Identify and assign resources for projects under the guidance of VP of R&D and Product Manager. 

  • Champions software quality and testing best-practices.

  • Provides project status reports.

  • Provides support for auxiliary QA responsibilities:

  • Review product documentation for completeness and correctness.

  • Participate in metrics collection and reporting.

  • Provide guidance and support for other QA Analysts.

  • Assists product developers and technical product support specialists in solution of moderately complex installation problems.

  • Participates in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and sprint retrospectives

What we are looking for:

  •  5+ years of automated & manual software testing experience.

  • Excellent knowledge of shell scripting, Java, C#, HTML, Javascript, and relational databases.

  • Experience and/or knowledge of configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, test case management software and automated testing tools.

  • Solid understanding of product functions.

  • Able to accurately estimate task durations and meet schedules under changing conditions.

  • Understands entire Agile SCRUM development process, including design, programming, and documentation.

  • Strong technical skills to include thorough knowledge of how PC Operating Systems, Server Operating Systems, Hardware platforms and browsers are relevant to QA activities and testing requirements for these environments.

  • Ability to mentor more junior associates.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Familiarity with MS Office Applications and MS Project.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar engineering discipline.

  • Prior knowledge of or experience in a public safety related field.
