Job Description:

ARCTOS is currently searching for a Research Engineer to join our team within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of Air Force Research Lab (AFRL/RX). This position involves computational efforts to aid material discovery of thermoset resins and layup and processing of these systems. The ideal candidate will develop computational methods to establish structure-property relationships across multiple length scales, from atomistic to molecular/nano scale to continuum material properties, using physics-based predictive modeling and simulation, augmented by artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) algorithms. The ideal candidate should develop computational methods to improve the processing of composite materials by using phenomenological and multiscale physics-based approaches, connecting experimental measurements to controllable processing parameters, with a strong focus on the connection from the nanoscale to continuum material properties.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop multi-scale physics-based models to optimizing composite material processing using machine learning methodologies.

  • Work with experimentalists to ascertain key processing parameters to integrate into phenomenological models.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of modern machine learning methodologies (deep learning, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), etc.)

  • Experience applying machine learning techniques – Classification, Clustering, Dimensional Reduction, Feature Engineering, Regression.

  • Experience with machine learning API’s (TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, etc.)

  • Ability to lead and contribute to complex teams.

  • Ability to contribute to government-led multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks.

  • Must be able to prioritize workloads.

  • Must thrive in fast-paced, changing environment with minimal supervision.

  • Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Office.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in multiphysics modeling softwares such as RAVEN, COMPRO, COMSOL, Abaqus.

  • Knowledge of Modeling and Simulation support.

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree (or soon to be awarded) in Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

  • Experience with machine learning algorithms and techniques is required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • Office environment.

  • Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screening, subsequent random screening per anti-drug and alcohol misuse prevention program requirements.

Travel:

  • Travel may be required and will be performed under the guidelines of Federal Travel Regulations (FTR) and/or Joint Travel Regulations, Volume II (JTR).
