ARCTOS is currently searching for a Research Engineer to join our team within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of Air Force Research Lab (AFRL/RX). This position involves development of novel thermoset polymer matrix composites by processing of neat polymer resins, reinforcements and fillers, and inks and dispersions. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of improving material processing and of structure-property relationships in composite materials, and will have proficiency in material characterization to ascertain materials' multiscale morphology and defect states, and relate this information to processing methods.
Develop new formulations of neat polymer resins, fibers, and fillers.
Fabricate test specimens, process material, and perform thermomechanical testing.
Identify key processing parameters that affect various properties and develop methodologies to adjust these parameters to optimize desired thermomechanical properties.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficiency with thermal characterization techniques such as TGA, DSC, TMA, DMA.
Proficiency with mechanical testing equipment and techniques such as flexural testing, fracture toughness testing, tensile testing, rheology, etc.
Proficiency with structural characterization techniques such as SEM & SEM-EDX, TEM, AFM, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, etc.
Ability to work with fabrication shop technicians to design custom testing rigs for unique specimens.
Ability to lead and contribute to complex teams.
Ability to contribute to government-led multi-disciplinary teams.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks.
Must be able to prioritize workloads.
Must thrive in fast-paced, changing environment with minimal supervision.
Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Office.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Additive manufacturing/3D printing (FDM, FFF, direct write printing, etc.)
Resin infusion (RI) and resin transfer molding (RTM).
Experience and Education Requirements:
Ph.D. degree (or soon to be awarded) in Materials Science and/or Engineering, or related field.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screening, subsequent random screening per anti-drug and alcohol misuse prevention program requirements.
