Departmental Overview

The Alvarez-Cohen Research Group consists of post-doctorate researchers, graduate students and undergraduate students. The purpose of this position is to create a full-time presence to assist in the research goals and administration of the Research Group. This position ensures all constituents of this laboratory can commit their full attention to their research projects; the incumbent provides for the efficient operation of the laboratory group. This is achieved by the incumbent s two main responsibilities: general laboratory management (including supplies, equipment, and safety), and incumbent s own scientific research.

The incumbent provides administrative/lab management and research support to the Alvarez-Cohen Research Group. Manage laboratory equipment and supplies critical for accomplishing research group goals. Ensures the efficient operation of the research group and assists other group members projects.

Responsibilities

45% Perform scientific research in the area of environmental engineering:

* Review relevant scientific literature to assist in laboratory research.

* Maintain and optimize biological reactors.

* Schedule lab group meetings.

Assist with onboarding and offboarding of new Lab Assistant's.

* Under independent supervision, assist in the development of laboratory techniques using an understanding of biochemistry, biology or related areas.

* Assist in evaluating and preparing written and oral reports.

40% Supervise purchasing, receiving, storing, and distribution of laboratory supplies:

* Ensure laboratory supplies are available, monitor supplies and reorder as needed.

* Process order requests from research group members, obtain purchase orders, and submit orders to vendors.

* Research vendors to reduce purchasing costs and make purchasing decisions (with supervisor approval).

* Resolve problems with billing and receiving.

5% Maintain laboratory equipment:

* Ensure all equipment is in good working condition.

* Submit work order requests to physical plant, as needed.

* Maintain warranties for laboratory equipment.

* Supervise laboratory and office computers; install security updates and remove viruses. Monitor proper use of laboratory resources.

5% Laboratory safety officer:

* Verify proper forms are displayed in laboratory.

* Perform safety inspections.

* Create and maintain chemical inventory.

* Help us apply for BUA amendments.

5% Organize laboratory clean-up:

* Schedule monthly cleanup of laboratory.

* Delegate responsibilities to research group, follow-up as needed.

Required Qualifications

* Undergraduate degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, biology, or related areas or equivalent experience.

* Two years water quality laboratory experience, including analytical techniques, trouble-shooting equipment problems, general laboratory management and sample analysis.

* Familiar with campus procedures (physical plant, purchasing); basic knowledge of campus laboratory safety protocols and procedures (OSHA).

* Experience with ordering supplies, contacting vendors and processing purchase orders.

* Experience with general laboratory management and maintenance of equipment.

* Highly organized and detail orientated. Able to work and communicate well in an environment with graduate students and post-doctorates. Ability to work and act independently and as part of a team.

* The hourly range designated for this position: $18.82 - $22.13; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
