POSITION SUMMARY:

The Nurse Technician provides quality care to patients under the direction of a RN, in accordance with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of Del Sol Medical Center. Under the supervision and/or discretion of a RN, the nurse technician performs various activities necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients and performs advanced technical nursing procedures and services within the parameters of the State Board of Nurse Examiners delegation rules. THE NURSE TECH TEMP ASSIGNMENT CANNOT EXTEND BEYOND 180 DAYS.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Demonstrates knowledge and application of patient care, to include activities of IV insertion, Wound Care/Dressing Changes, patient monitoring, patient/family education, activities of daily living, vital sings and intake and output, and other duties as assigned by the RN.

* Demonstrates ability to apply the nursing process in the patient's plan of care and in doing so uses critical thinking skills in patient care situations.

* Monitors and documents information regarding patient activities in collaboration with the RN.

* Participates in the unit based Quality Improvement process.

* Demonstrates knowledge and respect of patients' rights to privacy and protection of patient confidentiality.

* Plans, organizes and communicates patient care activities to the patient and the Registered Nurse.

* Demonstrates judgement in scope of clinical practice as defined by the Nurse Tech job description.

* Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES FOR THE NURSE TECHNICIAN MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIONS:

* Current enrollment in a nursing program and their course of study has included appropriate instruction to prepare them to perform the tasks that will be delegated. (At minimum, completion of 1st semester Registered Nursing courses).

A nursing student that fails a nursing course that causes the loss of eligibility to remain in the school of nursing, loses eligibility to remain in the nurse tech status. The individual has the opportunity (if available) to transfer into a different position that he or she is qualified and eligible for.

A graduate nurse that fails the NCLEX after the 1st attempt will be allowed up to two more attempts to pass the NCLEX. By the180th day, the Nurse Tech must have successfully passed the NCLEX examination.

* Foreign Nurse graduate that has applied for Texas Licensure and / or is preparing for NCLEX examination.

The Foreign Nurse graduate must take the NCLEX within 120 days of employment to retain eligibility in the Nurse Tech program. A Foreign Nurse that fails the NCLEX examination after the 1st attempt may remain in the Nurse Tech position up to the period of 120 days (based on position availability). By the 120th day, the Nurse Tech must have retaken and successfully passed the NCLEX examination. This period of time is not to exceed one year.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Required:
BCLS certified.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED: Preferred:

Age specific knowledge of patient population in the clinical area selected

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Currently enrolled in an accredited professional nursing program or on semester breaks from such programs. A student classification form signed by the school shall be submitted with the application, if requested by LPMC.

Must have successfully completed the basic fundamental nursing courses and be able to perform the fundamental skills learned in the 1st nursing semester.

Requires tact and diplomacy in dealing with patients, physicians, support staff and the general public.
*

Ability to move weight in excess of 100 pounds, with assistance from other staff.
*

Knowledge of infection control procedures.Ability to listen, empathize and respond to patient, family, internal and external partners needs.

Prefer:

Bilingual English and Spanish.
