WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
The Workbook is at the center of Tableau. It holds all the Vizzes, Dashboards, and Data Sources, and connects them all. It also brokers the features that want to make changes to the Workbook, undo mistakes and save it.
The Tableau Workbook was built with Desktop in mind. It's focused on writing out to a single file. The challenge ahead is to evolve the existing concepts to a server focused world, where storage and sharing are in the cloud. While we have ideas, the fun part is figuring out where we are going with a massive, abstract technical problem. Solutions may involve NoSQL databases, file system concepts, new API designs, and probably more things we haven't thought of yet.
SOME THINGS YOU'LL DO INCLUDE:
Lead your team through exploring an ambiguous technical space, create proofs of concepts, and develop a long term plan.
Work with other teams that depend on you, and talk to customers to ensure your solutions support our next set of features and our customers.
Champion quality engineering practices and quality code.
Coach, mentor, and grow your team towards career goals and increasingly high engineering and operational excellence standards.
WHO YOU ARE
EDUCATED. You have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
EXPERIENCED. You have strong software development skills, and you are an experienced manager and a track record of delivering architectural improvements that keep the customer in mind. You've run Agile teams and promote continuous improvement. Experience with products deployed both on-prem and in the cloud is a strong plus.
TECHNICAL. You have experience with C/C++. You have the background to provide guidance and facilitation and know when to use them. You've seen enough projects to know when a plan is doomed, or the information doesn't add up. You are comfortable with technical deep-dives into code, crash dumps, operating systems, infrastructure, and storage. Experience with both Linux and Windows is a plus.
STRONG COMMUNICATOR. You distill complex information down and communicate effectively across disciplines and to various levels of an organization.
CURIOUS. You want to learn more. You are interested in a variety of areas, and find other peoples' interests exciting. When something doesn't sound right, you want to learn more.
RELENTLESSLY HIGH STANDARDS. You are not satisfied with the status quo. You continuously inspire your team to improve our code, systems, and engineering practices. You ensure your team regularly delivers pragmatic solutions that drive towards a long-term architectural strategy.
