The Molecular & Genomic Pathology Laboratory at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital provides a broad range of clinical molecular tests for oncology and infectious diseases.
Primary functions of the Genomic Scientist:
To develop new molecular assays using next generation sequencing and other PCR based technologies and enhance and troubleshoot existing assays to achieve maximum performance;
To perform NGS-based genomic data interpretation, and results interpretation of other clinical assays. To prepare drafts of test reports.
To perform clinical assays and to participate in education and translational projects as needed.
CORE FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
Conceptualize the assay design, data processing needs and clinical value to the continuum of care.
Design strategies for developing new molecular assays by compiling literature in public domain and determine relevant gene targets for specific clinical needs.
Investigate the feasibility of new projects by initiating pilot studies and reviewing experimental data thoroughly and logically.
Perform all aspects of work for creating new assays including proper documentation of experiments and data analyses.
Perform trouble shooting of routine molecular assays, interpret and review clinical assay results.
Prepare written reports of study results for publication in peer reviewed journals.
Collaborate with faculty and staff on project development, data management and statistical analysis.
Assist other management tasks as needed.
Design, implement and troubleshoot experiments and analyze data.
Demonstrates commitment to our core values of excellence and innovation, integrity and respect, teamwork and communication.
Knows policies and procedures applicable to assigned duties. Uses sound judgment and is aware of potential hazards before taking action. Promptly reports errors/events or situations of actual or potential harm. Understands emergency procedures and can demonstrate appropriate response.
Promotes safety and the prevention of injury. Understands emergency procedures and demonstrates appropriate response. Involves staff in the identification of system issues and development of corrective actions. Educates, involves and supports staff in error/event reporting, problem identification, resolution, and compliance with all licensing/regulatory bodies.
PhD in Molecular Biology or related field
Competent in designing and optimizing primers and probes for PCR based assays.
Strong foundation in cell signaling pathways.
Direct experience with next generation sequencing and clinical laboratory are preferred.
