Primary Location: 223 Perimeter Center Pkwy NE, Atlanta, GA, USA Division: Cox Enterprises Job Level: Individual Contributor Travel: Yes, 5 % of the Time Schedule: Full-time Shift: Variable Requisition Number: 207222 An Atlanta investigative reporter provides in-depth cover stories for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution print and digital editions by independently examining the workings of government and other powerful institutions and individuals, pointing out wrongdoing or injustice, and holding those responsible accountable. The writer must be highly skilled at research and source development and knowledgeable about state and federal laws. He or she must be capable of quick-turn watchdog and investigative work and longer-term project work while maintaining rigorous standards for fairness and accuracy. A investigative reporter is responsible for working with a high degree of independence in an environment of some risk, collaborating with less experienced journalists and tackling difficult and impactful stories with skill, compassion and consistently high execution. Job Duties and Tasks: Identify and provide unique, in-depth investigative and watchdog stories for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution print and digital editions by independently examining the workings of government and other powerful institutions and individuals. Rely on strong news judgment and knowledge of reader interest to quickly develop reader-focused story ideas. Choose the best reporting path for efficiently vetting the thesis of the story and building an authoritative case, using data, public records, interviews and other appropriate reporting and research tools. Compile the story in a way that is convincing and compelling to drive impact. This will most often be in the written form but could include podcasts, visually driven stories, as told to, and other unique forms that will captivate readers and engage them. Collaborate with colleagues to give the story the best possible reader reception, including editors, digital specialists, visual journalists and others. Identify strong visual opportunities for all major stories by brainstorming, collaborating with visual journalists, consulting with sources and others. Approach story editing as a partnership, being open to suggestions and working for the best result for readers. Work with colleagues to present data and evidence in a way that bolsters the authoritativeness of the story. Work with marketing and others to provide all content needed to promote the story, including summaries, teases and behind-the-scenes material about how the reporting came together. Other duties as assigned including representing the newspaper to the public. Qualifications: Education: College degree preferred Specialized Experience: Extensive experience and proven record at the kind of research and reporting that grounds investigative reporting: Documents, data, context and interviews on sensitive subjects that allow an investigative reporter to master a topic and build a case for accountability. Yrs & Type of Experience Minimum of 5 years of professional journalism experience required, including significant investigative or watchdog work Proven record of serving audiences in a fast-paced, productive environment that is shaped by research, audience metrics and audience needs in print and in digital. Experience in obtaining, analyzing and interpreting government databases and public records. Demonstrated record of engaging writing that captures and evokes emotion; narrative and other skills for long-form writing a plus. Demonstrated record of exceptional accuracy and fairness.
