The Medical Interpreter will be responsible for providing Spanish translation and interpreter services for inpatients and outpatients.  Writing, analyzing, and editing written material to convert it into Spanish.  As a Medical Language Interpreter, the position serves as a member of a team that adapts and maintains service requests based upon ever changing needs of patients and their families, enhancing communication between clinical providers and Limited-English Proficient (LEP) patients. Language interpreters also work to increase clinician and patient experience as medical care is delivered while improving health outcomes and reducing legal risks.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8 am to 5 pm

Primary Responsibilities


  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and modifies practices related to interpreting services to meet individual patient and family needs.

  • Provide Spanish interpretation for patients and hospital staff as needed by translating medical documents and brochures, pamphlets, and patient instructions into targeted language, and should have a good understanding of medical terminology and cultural awareness.

  • Work with other disciplines to promote best practices related to language services, including but not limited to how to work with an interpreter, cultural competency, etc.  

  • Help families understand medical terminology and process to ensure compliance with care specially designed for children and to support patient and family satisfaction.

  • Identify barriers to effective communication throughout the hospital for customers whose primary language is not English. 

  • Must have familiarity with relevant ethical and cultural factors and skills in interpretation.

  • Assist in the process of early identification of patients who will need interpreter services and, when needed, advocate for their communication needs.

  • Participate in departmental initiatives Continuous Quality Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services.

  • Run daily EPIC reports for outpatient interpreter scheduling needs.

  • Maintain workload of interpreter and translation tasks that directly impact patients and families.

  • Prioritize workload to address the most critical needs for live interpretation during the shift.

  • Participate in training volunteers and bilingual cross-trained Associates when asked.

Qualifications


  • Must pass language proficiency test

  • Must have completed interpreter training as Bridging the Gap, Community Interpreter or similar

  • Certification through the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or  Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters or equivalent preferred
