The Cornell University Department of Physics, known for the versatility of its program and the breadth of its training, is unsurpassed in many areas. The presence on campus of a particle accelerator-one of just a few of its magnitude anywhere in the world-contributes to Cornell's reputation in particle and accelerator physics. Known for its Nobel Prize-winning work in low-temperature physics and theoretical astrophysics, the Physics Department continues to pave the way in these areas and in new fields within physics, including X-ray physics, biological physics, and nanostructure physics.
The department has 44 active professors and approximately 170 graduate students and 60 undergraduate majors. We offer a full range of university-level work in physics, from general education courses for nonscientists to doctoral-level independent research. Approximately 2000 students take physics courses each semester.
You will be joining a team of 12 administrative and technical staff members who work closely with each other in support of the department's education and research mission. You will be engaged with our graduate students and will play a role in their academic experience.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the position is currently working remotely. This position will be 30 hours per week and benefits eligible.
As the Graduate Admissions Coordinator, you will manage the graduate admissions process using the University's CollegeNET online system (~600 applicants) working closely with the admissions committee and DGS; organize and update admissions records using a large, complex database system. Provide essential records for admissions committee meetings. Plan and oversee prospective graduate student visits and our main visit weekend. Act as primary liaison with the Graduate School, members of the Graduate Field of Physics and admissions personnel in related fields. Prepare, edit and revise the department's graduate recruitment materials. Communicate directly with incoming students to prepare for the fall semester. Organize orientation events. Manage and update the graduate program and faculty web pages.
Required Qualifications: Associates Degree; 2-4 years' administrative experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong computer skills required including FileMaker Pro, Excel and Microsoft Word. Some working knowledge of web page management. Ability to work independently in busy environment, yet function effectively as part of a team. Responsible for projects from conception to completion. Complete multiple tasks involving high degree of complexity and confidentiality, strong attention to detail and accuracy, exercise good judgment and organize priorities. Good editing and writing composition skills required. Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills essential.
