Job Summary
Independently perform a variety of financial aid activities including reviewing and evaluating financial information submitted by applicants to determine aid award in accordance with established federal and university standards and guidelines.
Job-Specific Responsibilities
Financial Aid Responsibilities:
Calculate financial aid awards for entering and returning students, reviewing submitted forms and taxes to summarize financial circumstances and evaluate financial need using federal and institutional guidelines and methodologies
Support a caseload of current students (typically 450), counseling families via in-person meetings, phone, and email about financing options; reviews, prepares, and presents requests for reconsideration to the Financial Aid Committee
Serve as a Financial Aid Officer of the Day, answering questions about financial aid via email and phone for current Harvard students and parents
Admissions Responsibilities:
Provide information and advice about Harvard College, generally, and about its admissions procedures specifically, through information sessions conducted both in Cambridge and elsewhere. Travel may be undertaken independently or as joint travel with other institutions.
Conduct interviews of prospective and current applicants.
Read and evaluate admissions applications from assigned geographical regions (approximately 800 cases in recent years). Apply discretion and independent judgment in deciding which qualified students should be presented to the committee for possible admission.
Handle correspondence, email and telephone contact from prospective students, applicants, parents, secondary school administrators and the general public in assigned geographical regions.
Develop and nurture relationships with alumni/ae interviewers. Devise regional interview process procedure; plan and run alumni/ae interviewing workshops in assigned geographical areas. Train and guide alumni/ae on how to conduct successful applicant interviews.
Typical Core Duties
Evaluate and analyze financial information submitted by applicants, ensuring data is accurate and compliant, and process awards
Conduct needs analysis and prepare financial aid awards for students, review appeals for applicants requesting additional financial assistance
Counsel prospective and current students, and families, on financial planning and financial assistance
Responsible for event preparation and presentations such as entrance and exit counseling sessions, budgeting and debt workshops, admissions open houses, student orientation
Prepare analysis and projection of financial aid funds
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
Minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting, but may be remote, as directed by FAS.
Travel and night/weekend work may be required.
