Job Description 

Summary/General Job Description: Performs a wide range of duties and daily responsibilities associated with the functions of Pigment/QC Applications Laboratory including hands on color matching for Ferro Color Solutions North America Business across all pigment products with heavy focus on the Paints, Coatings and Inks Industries. Applications and Technical Support for the commercial team maintaining and developing new business opportunities for pigment sales with fulfillment of applications laboratory technical service requests, customer pigment sample requests, product technical complaints investigations, sales aids preparations, product training, market knowledge, process improvements and conservation of ISO 9001:2015 certified procedures

Essential Responsibilities: 


  • Apply industry experience to actively complete colored and anticorrosive pigments technical studies with heavy focus on Industrial, Architectural, Special Coatings and Inks market within the functions of Pigment and QC Applications Laboratory including hands on color matching across all pigment products.

  • Ability to solve problems and/or issues with color matching in plastics, coating, construction, and other applications with exceptional focus on Coatings Industry applications.

  • Actively involved in customer evaluations and product samples process assisting the commercial team to maintain and grow.

  • Increase the applications team knowledge concentrating on customer projects assisting the commercial team to provide Ferro pigments into the paints, coatings and inks market. 

  • Completes and reports data, results, conclusions, and test methods for laboratory evaluations for maintenance of business, customer complaints and generation of new business.

  • Communicate product line knowledge with customers and sales personnel from a technical perspective and recommend solutions.

  • Provide assistance and report to Applications Technical Manager technical service requests to pre-existing and new customers.

  • Ability to make recommendation from current price list which contains over 700+ products and over 400+ active pigments.

  • Identify product portfolio gaps and make recommendations to bridge these gaps through competitive benchmarking and industry research.

  • Perform quality control functions for custom blending including recommendations for off color situation.

  • Maintains MSDS and TDS to comply with OSHA regulations.

  • Prepare “special” reports as requested.

  • May perform other duties as deemed necessary.

  • Lead customer technical projects for the paints, coatings and inks market.

  • Serves as member of the ISO 9001 team including assisting in the preparation of monthly Quality meeting and reporting back to employees the decisions made by the meeting.

Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Science related field required; preferably Chemistry

  • Five or more years’ industrial experience preferably in a laboratory or company directly related to the pigment/coatings industry

  • Excellent knowledge of Internet software: Excel or similar Spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word or similar Word Processing software.

  • Requires technical experience in association with product, specifications and QC test methods within Industrial, Architectural, Special Coatings and Inks markets. Individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents oftentimes of a mathematical or legal. 

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence for different audiences

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw a valid conclusion.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 

    Travel Requirements:



  • Must be able to travel between corporate offices, division offices, warehouses, customer locations, and manufacturing locations.  May require multiple overnight travel not to exceed 20% of total work time.  Travel includes technical support visits to Mexico manufacturing facility.

  • Must possess strong organizational and communications skills.

  • Must have the capability to make decisions based on current set procedures without needing advice to perform technical work.

  • Ability to effectively present information, maintain confidentiality & supervisor-level security, and respond to common inquiries or complaints from groups of managers, employees, clients, and customers.

  • Ability to speak, write and read fluent English.

  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred

  • Ability to solve problems and/or potential problems such as color matching and pigment evaluations in multiple coatings systems including Military and Camo applications.

  • Ability to learn specific knowledge of company product lines, as well as principals and pigment industry standards.

Physical Demands: 

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.  Ability to lift up to 55 lb. pigment bags.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to see in color, ability to adjust focus. Works in a laboratory environment. While performing the duties of this position, the individual is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable differently able individuals to perform the essential functions of the position.  Noise level is usually moderate.
