About the Job
As-needed paleontological monitor will provide paleontological monitoring services for a variety of projects throughout California. The monitor will keep detailed project-related notes, including but not limited to construction activities observed, types of construction equipment used, names of foreman and heavy equipment operators, and geological and stratigraphical observations. In addition, the applicant will coordinate with construction crews and relay construction schedules to project managers. The potential for additional work, for qualified individuals is available. Competitive wages are based on level of education and experience. This position will be based in our Santa Cruz office.
Education and Essential Skills
The applicant should possess minimum qualifications for paleontological monitors as stipulated by the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. These qualifications include a BS or BA degree in geology, paleontology, or related field and one year of monitoring experience in the state of California; or an associate degree and/or demonstrated experience recognizing vertebrate fossils in a biostratigraphic context and experience salvaging vertebrate fossils. Additional skills are detailed below:
* Ability to recognize fossil specimens in the field
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Ability to work independently
* Ability read topographic maps and project maps
* Ability to use iPads for photography and note taking
* Able to work cooperatively with crew members, supervisors, and clients
* Willing to travel, with a Valid CA Driver s license in good standing and reliable transportation
* Ability to work in extreme climatic conditions. Cold or hot weather.
