Steel Dynamics (Columbus, MS) in Columbus, MS is looking for a Metallurgical Process Engineer for a 1st shift opportunity.
Responsibilities:
Develop new steel products or modify existing steel products to meet customer's product functionality needs.
Review new or unusual customer inquiries and participate in RFQs from a technical perspective
Collaborate with mill metallurgists to determine existing/modified/new steel grade and processing conditions
Lead and coordinate trials for new customers and products, and establish mill qualifications. Document the results.
Assist Technical Service Reps and Operations in troubleshooting and correcting product quality issues.
Collaborate with mill metallurgists in improving conversion costs (e.g., grade consolidation, reduction in transitions, alloy reduction, yield improvement, productivity and energy consumption improvement, etc.).
Participate in customer visits, tours, audits and certification procedures for the Mill.
Evaluate opportunities for reapplication of excess prime or secondary production.
Understand and utilize laboratory testing equipment, procedures, and applicable standards
Assist in diversifying product portfolio and customer base
Qualifications:
B. S. degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science
Good knowledge of chemistry - processing conditions - microstructure - property relationship for materials
Knowledge of steelmaking process.
2 years experience in materials research, product development, operations, or technical service.
