Job Description:

Job Summary

Drive tractor-trailer combinations to transport material between various Shapiro and customer facilities. When in town and hours are available, drivers may be required to make local runs or spot trailers to and from Shapiro's facilities or local vendors. Must have experience with roll-off truck equipment, end dumps, and flatbed trailers.

Responsibilities and Duties

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the assigned tractor and trailer in the transport of company equipment and transportation of material.
Drive truck to destination(s) in accordance with Federal regulations, normally in periods of up to 11 cumulative hours of driving in a 14-hour period. To be followed by an off-duty period of at least 10 consecutive hours.
Pick up and deliver trailers to customers and vendors as assigned and follow procedures for weighing materials.
Timely and accurate handling and completion of required written/electronic documentation and obtain signatures on appropriate documents.
Apply knowledge and skills of commercial driving and maneuvering vehicle at varying speeds under normal driving conditions as well as in more difficult situations, such as heavy traffic or inclement weather.
Ability to get along with customers, vendors and employees, including maintaining positive relationships with customers and vendors.
Report all injuries and accidents involving driver, company equipment and/or private property and any safety hazards.
Load or unload material from trailers to ensure that loads are properly secured and legal to transport per DOT regulations.
Inspect truck/trailer(s) for defects and confirm safe operating conditions before, during and after trips and submit a written/electronic report on the condition of the truck/trailer(s) at the end of each trip or tour of duty. Perform a pre-trip and post-trip check of motor vehicle and trailer according to company policy and DOT Regulations to ensure proper operation.
Perform frequent lifting, pulling and pushing of material to maintain proper weight or to balance load or to fill trailer.
Climb in and out of the cab of the truck, and trailer.
When hazardous materials are present:
Process paperwork required by the federal and state government relevant to the operation of an Over-The-Road vehicle.
Operate Electronic Logging Device.
Adhere to all Company policies and procedures, including but not limited to work rules, operational procedures and reporting requirements.
Perform occasional overnight runs. Sleeper unit or hotel provided.
Daily attendance is required.
Any other related relevant duty as required.

Check for proper preparation of shipping papers;
Check for agreement between information on shipping papers and any special markings or labeling that may be required. Assure that vehicle is properly placarded.

Qualifications and Skills

Class A CDL license with Hazardous Material Endorsement.
Must be able to be insured at standard insurance rates.
Must be at least 23 years of age and have two (2) years' experience operating tractor trailers.
Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours.
Must be able to shift manual transmission and operate foot pedals.
Must be able to safely perform bending and stooping and do repetitious lifting, pushing (maximum force of 64 ft./lbs.), pulling (maximum force of 64 ft./lbs.), and carrying of material that weighs up to 49 pounds on an occasional basis
Must be able to perform ladder climbing on and into truck and/or trailer(s), climb ladders and steps at loading or unloading facilities.
Must be able to perform crouching positions to check vehicle condition, tires and the underside of equipment operated.
Must be able to repeatedly enter and exit the vehicle's cab each day. Cab floor level is generally from 36 to 66 inches above ground level, with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and handholds; that requires bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching and balancing.
Must be able to reach above shoulder level, at waist level and below waist level for maneuvering and directing controls to operate the truck.
Must be able to install, secure, change and remove bows and tarp from trailer.
Must be able to hook/unhook various commercial vehicle combinations, manually lower and raise landing gear, operate the fifth wheel release lever, lock and release pintle-hooks, attach and release safety chains, climb into and out of vehicles, fuel vehicles and check engine oil and coolant levels which may involve jacking up cab of tractor or raising hood, depending on type of equipment being operated.
Must be able to read and write.
Must be able to communicate effectively with customers and maintain positive and professional relationship with customers.
Must pass Company and DOT physical and drug test
Must continue to meet DOT Medical Requirements.
History of safe tractor/trailer driving experience.
Must pass a Functional Capacity Evaluation.
