Primary Role


Under the direction of the Project Manager, operates repairs, and inspects water treatment and distribution system facilities following company, local, state and federal regulations, policies and procedures to ensure environmental compliance.




Key Accountabilities



  • Operates water system to provide compliance to any applicable environmental protection agency.

  • Monitors, conducts analytical tests, makes adjustments to and maintains operations of the water treatment plant as directed by the Operations Supervisor.

  • Performs technical work in the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant and distribution system. 

  • Work includes but is not limited to repairs to, and maintenance of equipment and facilities such as chemical pump cleaning, piping repairs and modifications, cleaning and painting of equipment and structures, machinery lubrication and equipment analysis.

  • Distribution system responsibilities will also include meter reading, customer service calls, mark outs, meter installations, valve operation, hydrant maintenance and flushing and all other related duties.

  • As the on-call operator, be available and attend to emergency calls during weekends, holidays, and evenings.

  • Respond to emergencies as quickly as possible and take further precautionary actions.

  • Coordinate and supervise activities of contractor personnel repairing the system and complete associated paperwork.

  • Local residency required in order to respond within 60 minutes of emergency calls.

  • Assists in maintenance of daily logs; reports unsafe conditions; records plant operating data as required.

  • Performs other related functions assigned or as they become apparent.



Knowledge/Skills



  • Knowledge of the techniques, equipment and materials used in the mechanical maintenance and repair of related equipment and systems.

  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of all the equipment in the water treatment and distribution system

  • Knowledge of methods and precautions in storing and handling chlorine and other industrial chemicals.

  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.

  • Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organization, and citizen customers.

  • Must be able to read gauges and meters.

  • Prepare and maintain accurate paperwork such as records, logs, orders, surveys and routine reports as directed.

  • Respond to emergency call-out within 1 hour.

  • Relief Operator will need to cover on-call assignments from time-to-time.  There will be regular weekend, holiday, and overtime work as needed. 

  • Must be able to work rotating shifts as needed.



Experience/Education



  • Two (2) years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of water systems

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

  • Must hold or have the ability to obtain a minimum of T1 Water Treatment Operator license OR W1 Water Distribution System Operator license within one (1) year of hire.
