If you are an Consultant Team Manager professional looking for an opportunity to grow, Emerson has an exciting opportunity for you!  Based in our Durham, NC office, you will direct the activities of this team of subject matter experts to achieve the global organization’s business objectives while also actively performing technical consulting tasks in support of project pursuits and project execution.

The manager may lead or be an active participant of project teams, providing guidance in all phases of the project life cycle from requirements definition through plant startup in a collaborative, customer facing role.  Additionally, the consultant team manager works closely with the Project Manager, Project Technical Leads and other technical resources to deliver a successful technical solution that meets requirements for quality, budget and schedule, often on multi-discipline-technology or mega-projects.  

The consulting team manager must cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including business development, end-users, project managers, engineers and senior staff members. The nature of the position involves actively participating in multiple work-groups at one time and disseminating information across all levels of the organization.



AS A CONSULTANT TEAM MANAGER, YOU WILL:


  • Manage the technical activities of a professional staff of ~12 globally located technical consultants to achieve business and project objectives

  • Lead individual and team development through approved HR guidance and practices, while maintaining staffing at the agreed upon level any by actively engaging in efforts to recruit talent that supports a diverse and inclusive culture.

  • Conduct 1:1’s with direct reports and solicit feedback from stakeholders for annual performance reviews.

  • Support problem solving practices to identify and resolve technical and operational problems. Collaborate with peers to resolve problems that cross into inter-related teams.

  • Provide high-level technical guidance to multiple project teams for execution strategy and risk management with ongoing project engagement.

  • Train and mentor other technical consultants, project technical leads, and other team members fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement to accelerate the development of future project leaders.

  • Support the sales organization with project pursuits.  Provide input for project scope, financials, and execution strategy to ensure successful project execution.  Participate in client presentations and interviews.

  • Work with customers to influence long-term automation plans and strategies, identify potential projects, explain Emerson products and services capabilities and frame those projects including financial justification.

  • Proactively develop customer relationships; anticipate and provide solutions to customer needs giving high priority to customer satisfaction

  • Work with customers to develop project methodologies that will enhance their standards

  • Work directly with customers to define automation philosophy and requirements through client interviews and documentation analysis.

  • Map automation solutions to process requirements while applying S88 and S95 concepts.

  • Lead teams performing project pre-FEED and FEED activities, defining project requirements and determining a technical approach to meet those needs.

  • Monitor project team performance and quality of deliverables.

  • Perform product demonstrations and technical presentations in a variety of settings, including customer meetings, internal meetings, training sessions, and trade shows.

  • Develop and improve processes, procedures, standards and tools used in the execution of projects to ensure consistent approach across all life sciences projects globally.

  • Provide input to technology to recommend future product enhancements that help meet customer demands.

  • Stay up-to-date on emerging industry trends to ensure the organization’s continued operational preparedness.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:


  • Bachelors of Science in Engineering or equivalent with minimum 15 years of overall process control engineering experience, OR 20 years of equivalent experience.

  • A minimum of 10 years working on complex batch process control projects including implementation of large scale DCS or PLC solutions in the Life Sciences industry.  Experience must include leading a large automation project, working with customers to create functional requirements, designing control strategies and providing startup support at site.

  • Five or more years of direct people management experience.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

  • Must have the demonstrated ability to work in a team environment as both a leader and an individual contributor.

  • Ability to quickly establish good working relationships with others from all levels of the organization.

  • Knowledgeable in FDA validation requirements preferred, including: User Requirement and Design Specs, Business Process Procedures, Design Reviews, Requirements gathering

  • Deployment experience with Process Automation System (PAS) solutions (e.g. DeltaV, Rockwell, Honeywell, etc.).

  • Experience with the compliance of the systems and batch record and data integrity.

  • Experience writing functional specifications or user requirements.

  • Experience working in a global, highly matrixed business.

  • Experience leading critical, large-scale, and complex projects.

  • Articulate and able to communicate information effectively to diverse audiences.  Capable of translating highly technical subject matter terminology into business terms and recommend alternatives to both senior management and project teams.

  • Deep knowledge and proficiency in several of the following areas:

    • Technical sales support

    • Project execution life cycle

    • DeltaV PCS system architecture and software design

    • Syncade MES system architecture and software design

    • Writing user requirements, functional specifications, design specifications, code configuration, and test protocols

    • Electrical & Instrumentation design and implementation

    • Continuous and Batch Process control  strategies deployed in the life sciences industry

    • Resource management

    • Leading large cross-functional technical teams

    • Customer interface

    • Upstream and downstream life sciences processes and utility systems


  • Ability to travel for routine, short-duration (one to two weeks) project meetings, training and other business events.

  • Ability to travel for temporary assignments (domestic and international) away from the Emerson home office (e.g. customer project sites.) Typical travel assignments range from two to six months at a time or 25% to 75% of total time per year.

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States - sponsorship will not be provided for this position.
 

 PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:


  • Experience with regulatory/compliance documentation and procedures preferred

  • Biotech/Pharmaceutical experience highly preferred

  • DeltaV experience strongly preferred 

  • Experience working at a Life Science manufacturer is helpful
