Associate Editor, Climate Science

Location: Beijing, Shanghai, Heidelberg, New York

The Springer Nature Journals group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.

For the Earth and Environmental Sciences Journals Group at Springer Nature we are seeking an Associate Editor for the launch and development of an open-access journal on climate action. The journal will be highly interdisciplinary, combining environmental, socio-economic, and behavioral sciences and aiming at building a bridge from science to action towards scientifically informed policies at local and global level.

This is a rare opportunity for an enthusiastic candidate to be involved in the development of a new journal from the very beginning and to help shape its content and features, in a highly timely and important field. 

Reporting to and under the guidance of an Executive Editor you will be managing the day-to-day tasks of the journal, handle the peer-review process, support the Editor-in-Chief, and play an influential role in determining the content and liaising with the scientific community.

Responsibilities:

•    Assist in the daily management of the journal workflow, with the objective of providing rapid peer-review

     and publication decisions, acting as handling editor on manuscripts 

•    Develop the journal to deliver a best-in-class author experience 

•    Manage recruitment and training of new Editorial Board Members (EBMs) 

•    Liaise with EBMs to follow up on peer review and final decisions

•    Resolve pre- and post-publication issues raised by staff, EBMs and readers (e.g. authorship, scope, ethics and

     consent, misconduct), including communication with authors and other stakeholders

•    Establish and maintain relationships with EBMs, including attending in-person or virtual meetings

•    Proactively solicit high-quality manuscripts and initiate topical collections to steer journal focus and impact

•    Represent the journal at international and national conferences and in author workshops

•    Support social media and marketing activity 

•    Support press releases and write blog posts and editorials to facilitate knowledge transfer and action-oriented dialogue 

Experience, skills & qualifications:

•    Educated to master degree level and ideally holding a PhD in environmental, social sciences, or economics,

     with experience in climate studies 

•    Editorial experience is a plus

•    Thorough understanding of the research community and its needs

•    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills

•    Organizational and time management skills

•    Ability to work on your own initiative and independently within a (virtual) team environment

•    Active, supportive team player

•    Willingness and ability to travel
