Water Treatment Plant Operator --Class III/IV Licensed at West Virginia American Water in Charleston, West Virginia

Do you have a passion for the environment?  A love of science and chemistry?  This job may be just what you are looking for!  A drinking water plant operator oversees the process and equipment that treat water to make it safe to drink in our local communities.  This full-time position will work out of our Kanawha Valley Treatment facility in Charleston, WV and will work 12-hour shifts.  You must be able & willing to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.  Based on the rotating schedule, you will work an average of 14 days per month!  

You must possess at least a Class III Water Treatement license by the state of WV and be willing to obtain your Class IV within one year of start date.

Primary Role

Controls treatment plant pumps and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use.

Key Accountabilities

• Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treating plant. Controls feeds specified amounts of chemicals, such as chloride, ammonia, and lime into water or adjusts automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.


• Starts agitators to mix chemicals and allows impurities to settle to bottom of tank. Pumps purified water into water mains. 


• Monitors panelboard and adjusts controls to regulate flow rates.


• Cleans tanks and filter beds, using backwashing (reverse flow of water). 


• Tests water samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities, using colorimeter, turbidimeter and conductivity meter. Dumps chemicals such as alum into tanks to coagulate impurities and reduce acidity. 


• Records data, such as residual content of chemicals, water turbidity, and water pressure. May operate portable water-purification plant to supply drinking water.


• May utilize telemetry system to monitor water tank levels and water pressure and adjust booster pumps to maximize system effectiveness in delivery of treated water to the system.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must posses at least a non restricted Class III Water Plant Operators License from the State of West Virginia.


2. Must have 90 CEUs and successfully pass Class IV Operators exam within one (1) year of eligibility to take the exam (two (2) years prior to completing minimum experience requirements.


3. Must successfully complete a pulmonary function test.


4. Be physically able to satisfactorily perform the required duties and work assignments.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction or possible injury to the sense of hearing unless hearing protection is worn.
