Centra Credit Union has an exciting opportunity for Fulltime Mortgage Loan Underwriter at our Columbus, IN location.  This position is responsible for underwriting mortgage loans in compliance with secondary market guidelines, industry regulations, and Centra Credit Union loan policies and procedures.  Responsible for recommendations and approvals to be within compliance of policies and regulations.  Promotes the credit union in the business community.  Assists staff with questions regarding Centra Credit Union mortgage products and services, including any necessary problem resolution.  Looks for opportunities to pre-approve other loan products to offer the member(s).  The underwriter exercises prudent discretion and independent judgment in their decision-making. 

RESPONSIBILITIES for this position include:

• Reviews loan applications for underwriting requirements. Analyze and verify the employment profile, credit strength and property characteristics.


• Approves or denies loan applications within established lending authority & established time frame.


• Maintains mortgage underwriter queue of files to be reviewed for pre-approval, credit underwrite and clear to close.


• Answers questions and solves problems on loan inquiries from branch lenders, MLO’s and mortgage processors.


• Responds to inquiries submitted to the Underwriters Mailbox.


• Determines the mortgage rates within the established guidelines. Updates the daily rates on the website and distributes to all lending & corporate staff.


• As needed, makes recommendations on loan exceptions to Management.


• Continually stays abreast of guideline changes with MI, FHLMC, FHLBI, industry standards and regulatory compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS for this position requires skills, education/ training and experience in the following areas:

• Associate’s degree required


• One to three years’ experience and/or training


• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered


• Requires mortgage lending knowledge, loan judgement and analytical skills, including analyzing business/personal tax returns.
