Job Description

The Core Technologies group of John Crane Inc. is currently seeking a skilled Ceramics / Materials Engineer to join their Research and Development team in Morton Grove, IL. This position will support efforts to develop novel ceramic materials through advanced ceramic processing routes.

We are looking for a self-starter with good organizational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to produce high-quality innovative technical content. This is a hands-on position and the candidate is expected to have working experience in advanced ceramic powder processing and consolidation processes as well as sound understanding on material Composition-Processing-Microstructure-Property relationship. Duties & Responsibilities

* Conduct lab- and pilot-scale processing of advanced ceramic powder formulations and sintering using conventional and novel sintering methods.

* Develop stable slurries of ceramic powders and additives, optimize slurry characteristics, remove solvents using spray-drying process and conduct sintering trials.

* Develop experimental plans and conduct trials to evaluate formulations and enhance process performance.

* Manage projects to ensure on-time delivery of high-quality results appropriate to the project goals. Document accomplishments in clear and coherent technical reports and presentations.

* Create specifications for new equipment, evaluate vendors/suppliers and make procurement recommendations.

* Manage installation of equipment and qualification processes. Develop standard operating procedures (SOP s).

* Solve technical/scientific problems using sound engineering principles, creativity, and product design verification techniques.

* Develop innovative ideas and identify breakthrough technologies to support John Crane s technology roadmaps.

* Evaluate and test new materials and technology concepts at John Crane s technology labs and when necessary, at 3rd party labs.

* Maintain and operate lab- and pilot-scale equipment independently. Maintain laboratory and pilot-plant area in good order in accordance with 5S policy.

* Ensure proper operating procedures are followed, adhering to all safety policies and procedures and quality regulations and standards.

* Perform additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

* Additional duties and responsibilities will vary based upon local business / departmental needs

* Bachelor s degree in Ceramic Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline, from an accredited institution.

* Hands-on experience in ceramic processing, including ceramic slurry processing, preparation of stable dispersions, spray-drying and high temperature sintering, is essential.

* Hands-on experience in non-conventional sintering techniques, including FAST (Field Assisted Sintering Techniques), is a clear asset.

* Expertise in non-oxide ceramic materials and their Composition-Process-Microstructure-Property relationship are essential.

* Sound knowledge in ceramic characterization techniques (physical, mechanical, thermal and tribological), microscopy (optical, SEM and EDS) and failure analyses are required.

* Computer knowledge (PC-configuration, MS-Windows, Network knowledge, MS-Office, etc.) is required.

* A functional technical knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), CAD and use of digital design tools (e.g. AutoCAD, SolidWorks) are highly desirable.
