Research co-op 2021

Responsibilities: The co-op student will work closely with a research team in Advanced Materials Group exploring the use of novel materials for wearable products.

The co-op student will help with material research and development for wearable products.  Focus will be placed on understanding and manipulating structure-property relationships of formulations using different monomers, co-polymers, and additives. The candidate will tune formulations and vary processing parameters to create polymers that are environmentally robust and show desirable attributes.  Key formulations will be built into prototypes for on-body comfort and stability testing. The candidate will characterize formulas using conventional and custom test equipment, such as DMA, Instron, and impact testers.

Skills:  Hands on laboratory experience, statistics, technical writing, mechanical characterization, environmental testing, chemical safety training, Microsoft Office, Instron, DMA

Candidates should be available full time from January 2021 - August 2021. A successful candidate will have prior laboratory R&D experience (industrial internship or undergraduate research program) in materials science or a related field and a basic understanding of statics and mechanical characterization.  The candidate should be self-motivated, organized, and interested in hands-on laboratory research. Knowledge of composites, polymer materials, surface science and processing techniques, statistics, and understanding the relationship between mechanical structure and property are highly desirable.

Education/Class Requirements: Materials science, polymer / plastics engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering (focus in materials / structural properties). Rising sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate. Graduate students are welcome to apply as well
