This position works remotely requiring a telecommuting agreement. The employee shall be available in a fulltime capacity during assigned telecommuting work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor). During the assigned work hours, the employee shall not be the primary caregiver of any children, adults or elders. The employee shall agree to allow the University to assess safety and security of the remote workplace, to ensure that the designated work space is safe and free from hazards and to maintain, repair, inspect, or retrieve University-owned equipment.

Through the work of thousands of educators, Smarter Balanced created an online assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as tools for educators to improve teaching and learning. Position Summary

The Communications Specialist, reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, is responsible for managing and implementing select communications programs and activities for Smarter Balanced, including written, visual, digital and electronic communications for a diversity of audiences. The central role is to support development and execution of the organizations external and internal communications efforts. The incumbent utilizes written and verbal communication skills to communicate with diverse audiences in an inclusive manner working with a variety of productivity tools, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Suites, MailChimp, HootSuite, website CMS systems and social media.

Job Duties

50% - Operations

Independently researches, selects sources for interview, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Obtains copyright permission.

Manages comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications for a diversity of audiences.

Ensures all materials and publications meet specific electronic requirements.

Establishes and maintains schedules and records for the production of publications.

Routes jobs through scheduling, editing, writing, design, review, and publication.

50% - Publishing

Under limited supervision, researches, writes and / or edits material for a variety of publications for internal and external audiences that effectively deliver the desired message to a diversity of audiences.

Produces and edits articles, press releases, profiles, briefings, blogs, collateral, and / or other written material using subject matter expertise.

As an editor, ensures clarity, organization, accuracy, style, and quality of written work.

Independently plans, schedules, designs, and coordinates publications or presentation graphics that meet the needs of the organization.

Designs a broad range of publication materials as well as Web pages on the public and internal member websites.

Creates and identifies images and graphics that represent and appeal to a diversity of audiences.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

* Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.

* Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.

* Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target diverse audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message.

* Experience with computer applications for publishing, image handling, social media and / or web production.
