Job Description:

FTI is currently looking for a Ship Navigation Simulator Operator to support the Surface Warfare Schools Command (SWSC) in Newport, RI. SWSC serves as a training 'Center of Excellence' where officers and senior enlisted leaders hone their skills to serve at sea. The professional education and training offered at SWSC provides instruction in the full complement of surface ship skills, including foundational skills such as navigation, seamanship and ship handling, mid-level operational skills, and advanced proficiencies to include maritime warfare and command at sea.
The Ship Navigation Simulator Operator will utilize a blended training model that advances the navigation and ship handling objectives by incorporating classroom time, practical assignments, and simulator experiences. SWSC utilizes a variety of training simulators to replicate real world situations and offer the chance for students to gain proficiency without actual risk. The Navigation Simulator Operator will leverage the simulated environment and provide feedback to help students understand complex factors and improve performance.

- Support classroom and simulator-based ship Navigation instruction in accordance with Navy Training Policies and quality standards.
- Utilize the 360-degree learning environment for instruction; observe and support instruction of students while simulating high-risk shipboard scenarios
- Analyze student performance; provide feedback and evaluation of navigational decisions within the scope of the learning objectives
- Develop clear rubrics and skill assessments to analyze student performance and acknowledge the behaviors that demonstrate progress and mastery
- Provide post-scenario debriefings
- Evaluate existing courseware to ensure it assists students in the transfer of knowledge from trainer to ship
- Create competency-based learning scenarios that align with overall Navy training goals
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Experience driving surface ships as an Officer In Charge (OIC) of the navigation watch gained as a US Navy Surface Warfare Officer, through qualification such as Officer of the Deck (OOD) in another US Navy community, or through USCG license as Second Mate, Unlimited
- Demonstrated deep understanding of navigation, seamanship, and ship handling
- Expertise in COLREGS and U.S. Inland Navigation Rules and standard Navy conning commands
- Ability to implement adult learning theory into courseware and supplemental training materials
- Experience assessing, evaluating, and coaching others
- Experience as a trainer or instructor highly preferred
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with team members and customers at all levels
- Active DoD security clearance preferred; ability to obtain DoD security clearance required

- Excellent writing, communication, analytical and instructional design skills
- Knowledge of learning theory of adult education preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
