Director, Senior ERISA Consultant

Job Profile Summary :

The ERISA Consultant is assigned as:


  • A dedicated resource for TRS defined contribution plan clients (Regional ERISA Consultant), or

  • A pooled resource for Enterprise Bundled defined contribution plan clients (National ERISA Consultant),

and has overall responsibility within John Hancock RPS to help their clients stay in compliance with ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code and ensure that their clients retirement programs are meeting their needs and the needs of their employees.

Individual Responsibilities:


  • Participate in client meetings, service team meetings, and onboarding meetings subject to service model guidelines

  • Generate professional service revenue (1) to meet or exceed assigned revenue goals or (2) to significantly contribute to team revenue goal

  • Review and maintain plan documents to ensure compliance with regulations, John Hancock RPS operations and evolving plan design

  • Consult with clients on complex compliance matters and to provide plan design recommendations and legislative updates

  • Serve as a SME to other team members and departments on ERISA matters

  • Participate on John Hancock RPS project teams

  • Participate in RPS Sales Finals

  • Provide training classes to internal and external clients

  • Provide thought leadership via plan sponsor/advisor/TPA webinars and/or whitepapers and viewpoints on topical items in the retirement industry

Job Requirements:


  • 20+ years of defined contribution experience

  • Strong ERISA knowledge

  • Strong 409A knowledge

  • Ability to generate revenue

  • Willingness to travel overnight (8-12 business trips per year)

  • Strong analytical and research skills

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Ability to make presentations to clients/prospects on telephone and in person

  • Industry relevant designation such as ASPPA or CEBS and/or law degree preferred (or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire)
