VLSI CAD Developer, High Performance Physical Design at Nvidia Corporation in Austin, Texas

Posted in General Business 30+ days ago.

Type: Full-Time

Job Description:

We are seeking an innovative CAD Developer with particular interest in physical design algorithms, which span R&D in hardware, software, and mathematics domains. This position combines the VLSI design world of placement, routing, floorplanning, extraction, and DRC strategies with the computational domains of C++ concurrency, high performance computational geometry, graph theory, discrete optimization, and machine learning. Constant creativity and a self-drive to explore and perfect optimization techniques is required. If you like to work across many technical areas and see your successes directly realized in the world's fastest AI hardware, this is it!

The size and complexity of NVIDIA's designs requires a fusion of industry-leading EDA tools and highly sophisticated internal tools to tackle the largest, most intricate challenges. Our team addresses the latter by combining advances in high performance software, machine learning, and VLSI hardware design to craft large scale internal CAD tools for delivering unsurpassed computing hardware. NVIDIA's engineering environment offers an ideal combination of supercomputing infrastructure and vast R&D resources, so you can explore colossal ideas as a world-class leader, plus the nimbleness and opportunity to grow in a rapidly developing company. Check online for yourself -- NVIDIA employees love working here for good reason! We are accelerating our growth even further by building our teams with the smartest people in the world.

What you'll be doing:

  • Invent and tune new methods for high performance and high capacity physical data structures applied across the entire design space from early physical architecture through place and route and even into silicon analytics.

  • Help research and develop novel optimization, visualization, and automation strategies across all of VLSI to help invent the fastest computers in the world.

  • Collaborate with team members to further build your expertise in parallel computing, AI, and algorithm design to bridge from theory to practical implementation.

  • Although we do write a lot of code, this is broader than a typical CAD or EDA role. Instead, we as a team guide the whole process from discovery and invention of new hardware opportunities, through developing solutions, and working directly with design teams to lead adoption.

What we need to see:

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science

  • Strength in both hardware and software design

  • 3+ years experience, which may include major academic/thesis projects, in one or more of these areas: floorplanning, place & route, spatial data structures, and design optimization.

  • Expertise in C++ and some experience with Python

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ways to stand out from the crowd:

  • C++17/C++14 experience, such as lambdas and concurrency

  • Familiarity with parallel computing, especially if you have used CUDA

  • Experience or strong interest in CAD for physical, timing, and power optimization

  • Deep understanding of algorithm design principles such as complexity analysis, efficient memory and I/O use, etc.

  • OpenGL and/or experience with GUIs and data visualization

  • In general, an obsession with performance and the practical skills to create high performance CAD for building high performance hardware
