Position Responsibilities

The Senior Project Accountant position requires a comfort with financial information and the ability to analyze and communicate financial information to the Firm leadership.  The successful candidate should be able to pick up financial and industry terminology quickly and become and office wide resource/training for the ERP system. Reporting directly to a Regional Manager of Project Accounting, you will be expected to develop a strong relationship with principals and project managers to help reach financial goals on projects.


  • Full responsibility for the accounting of complex projects and the timeliness of billings to clients.  

  • Assure compliance with all Firmwide policies and procedures. 

  • Assure accounting and financial presentation of projects in accordance with GAAP and Modified Cash Basis of Accounting. 

  • Issue project performance reports accurately and promptly and review project earnings and profitability. 

  • Analyze and report variations between actual results and budgets. 

  • Manage financial and administrative aspects of consultant relationships. 

  • Review contracts (prime and sub consultants) and assist Project Managers with managing project budgets via Deltek Resource Planning, including monthly analysis and feedback.

  • Analyze data and prepare periodic reports, including backlog analysis and status reports. 

  • Manage accounts receivable. Review aging - 30/60/90 days past due accounts. 

  • Track monthly consultant’s accrual of expenses.  

  • Mentor Project Accountants and Project Coordinators.

Leadership Responsibilities


  • Actively leads projects, teams and initiatives.

  • Directly trains and mentors team members and, more broadly, interiors, architectural, engineers, planning and graphics staff in the office and at large as appropriate.

  • Directly supervises staff and is committed to direct reports' professional development.

  • Develops and engages in talent strategy to find specialists, leaders, and future professionals for the firm through recruitment, resume reviews and interviews.

  • Actively engages in internal and external professional development opportunities.

  • Develops and/or manages, in collaboration with team members, a clear and consistent work plan to achieve the project budget, deliverables, and schedule. Actively monitor and assess progress with leadership through all phases of the project.

  • Demonstrates leadership in the implementation of sustainable strategies in all project assignments and the associated development of staff knowledge.

  • Coordinates and supports business development, public relations, and marketing opportunities.

  • Leads in the development of standards, policies, and procedures.

  • Protects SOM from financial and legal risk.

   

Minimum Qualifications


  • At least 5-7 years of professional experience in an accounting/finance department

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Project Management, Business or related field

  • Ability to manage a variety of personalities

  • Work independently, take initiative, set priorities and see projects through completion

  • Excellent communication and research skills

  • Advanced Excel skills and functionality (v-lookups, pivot tables)
