GENERAL SUMMARY: The Thoracic Surgery Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team and is responsible for providing and coordinating comprehensive care to both well and ill patients in the in-patient and out-patient setting. Intervenes in acute and/or chronic illness and coordinates care between in-patient and out-patient services at Sibley Memorial Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Institution. Works with a multitude of specialists and providers on behalf of the Thoracic Surgery Program, serving as the clinical resource for patients. Monitors quality of surgical care across the in-patient-out-patient continuum. Obtains appropriate histories, performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic testing as well as develops care and treatment plans. Other activities are in support of patient/family education, staff education, unit activities, and psychosocial care of patients and families.

* Licensed to practice as Nurse Practitioner in Adult or Family Health in the District of Columbia.

* Master s degree in Nursing from an AANP or ANCC accredited school.

* Minimum of 2 years clinical experience as Nurse Practitioner, preferably in a surgical specialty.

* Currently certified as a Nurse Practitioner by national credentialing institution and commitment to maintain certification as required.

* Prescribes medications including oral, parenteral, intramuscular, or subcutaneous drugs.

* Prescribes controlled medications within the District of Columbia s advanced practice nurse scope of practice and per Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) guidelines.

* AOCNP certified or commitment to obtain within 1 year of hire.

* Current CPR Certification required.
