The Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Endowed Assistant Professor, for academic year 2021-22. The department seeks applicants with expertise in Medical Sociology, with a focus on health inequalities, particularly regarding issues of race. Secondary areas of interest include the ability to teach research methods, or areas that complement our existing departmental strengths in race/ethnicity, gender, global inequalities, urban sociology, and sociology of religion. The successful candidate will be joining a department with 13 full-time faculty members, over 150 majors and 80 minors, and MA and PhD graduate programs with a total of about 45 students. This search is part of a University-wide, multi-year hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body and committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the pursuit of external grants. Of special interest are candidates who can further the University s efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Successful candidates must maintain a strong research program, including the pursuit of external grants, demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring, and demonstrate service contributions to the profession, the department, the university and potentially, to the larger community. This position is supported by a university endowment and comes with a research budget beyond the customary start-up costs and faculty professional development funds. The teaching load is two courses per semester. Teaching in the university Core Curriculum and in the Sociology graduate program is expected.
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Sociology at the time of appointment in August 2021. Candidates for the position must have a record of (or clear potential for) distinguished scholarship, interdisciplinary or grant-funded research, teaching and mentoring excellence, and service. The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.
