The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) seeks a tenure-track candidate for the position of Assistant Professor of Italian, with expertise in Italian or Italian Studies, for academic year 2021-22. The successful candidate will be joining one of the most diverse departments at Loyola, with more than 20 full-time faculty members who teach modern European as well as lesser-taught languages Polish, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese with over 13 majors and minors, and a graduate program in Spanish. This search is part of a University-wide, multi-year hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body and committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the pursuit of external grants. Duties and Responsibilities: Candidates will assume the direction of the Italian Studies Major while teaching 4 courses per year in such areas as Italian Language, Modern and Contemporary Italian Studies, Italian Cinema, and Italian Culture and Civilization. The candidate s fields might include Postcolonial Studies, Transnational Studies and Migration Studies, Mediterranean Diasporic Texts and Methodologies, Women and Gender Studies, and Queer Studies. The successful candidate is expected to pursue a strong research program, including the pursuit of external grants.

QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Italian or Italian Studies at the time of appointment, as well as experience teaching all levels of language, demonstrated excellence in research and teaching, and the potential for distinguished scholarship, grant-funded research, and student mentorship. Administrative experience in program or curriculum design is highly desirable as is interdisciplinary teaching and research. The candidate must have native or near-native fluency in Italian and English, and should possess a diverse scholarly agenda and a commitment to working across disciplines and fields of studies, engaging in dialogue with scholars and research in such adjacent areas as Italian American Studies, the Honors Program, Women and Gender Studies, Latin American Studies, and Global and International Studies. The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.
