DESCRIPTION

The Department of History of Art and Architecture, University of California Santa Barbara, invites applications for a position as Director of the Art, Design and Architecture Museum at UCSB, with a concurrent appointment as a tenured Associate or Full Professor, or Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE),or Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment (Sr. LSOE), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2021.

We seek a colleague who will take primary responsibility for leadership, strategic planning and fiscal management, supervising a staff of 10 employees (in addition to various student and part-time casual employees). The Director has primary artistic and intellectual responsibility for the development of exhibitions, publications and programs, and provides leadership for collections development. S/he/they fosters collaboration with UCSB s academic departments and programs, oversees the Museum s academic outreach efforts and represents the AD&AM locally, regionally and nationally.

As Museum Director, the position requires an energetic professional with experience and vision to oversee a dynamic program of exhibitions and related activities in the contexts of ambitious undergraduate and graduate academic programs and the Santa Barbara arts and architecture community. Candidates are required to have a minimum of five (5) years of professional museum experience by the time of appointment. Excellent communication and organizational skills, success in public speaking, grant writing, donor cultivation and a strong artistic and academic vision are highly desirable, as well as the ability to collaborate closely with faculty and motivate staff, students, and community members. A strong record of curating exhibitions and/or administrative service in museums is expected.

The Director will hold, with appropriate qualifications, a position as a tenured Associate or Full Professor or Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE) or Sr. LSOE within the Department of History of Art and Architecture, with a reduced teaching load of 2 courses (Professor track) or 4 courses (LSOE track) per year. The position is open to any research specialization within the field of art and/or architectural history, including museum studies.

As a faculty member of the Department of History of Art and Architecture, candidates with a Ph.D. in art history, architectural history or a closely related discipline by the time of application are preferred. The ability to teach courses in the applicant s area of specialization ranging from introductory survey courses to advanced graduate seminars is required. The ability to contribute to the department s Museum Studies program is essential. Complementarity to existing faculty research and teaching strengths is highly desirable.

The Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE)series requires an MA in art history, architectural history or a closely related discipline by the time of application. This is a permanent full-time faculty position with responsibilities including professional service; teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels; mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students; participation in university service; and/or scholarly and creative activities. Security of Employment is analogous to tenure. Faculty in this title are members of the Academic Senate, with benefits and privileges that parallel the professorial track, including eligibility for faculty housing programs, medical insurance, and retirement benefits. Appointees in the LSOE series are regularly evaluated for merit salary increases, based upon the responsibilities mentioned above.
