Description

Applied Research Associates, Inc. provides operational support, research and development support, training support, subject matter expert advice, and decision support to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) as part of its Technical Reachback contract. The successful candidate will provide general knowledge and subject matter expertise in all facets of meteorology, with a particular focus on how different types of weather impact transport and dispersion of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) hazards/phenomena. Hazard prediction modeling of incidents across the CBRN realm is required, and it is expected that the candidate will develop an understanding of the impacts of high-yield explosives, both as stand-alone events and as part of CBRN-related incidents. Some natural hazard modeling and decision support will also be required. The successful candidate must demonstrate a willingness to learn from and interact with individuals across a wide variety of subject matter backgrounds.
Below are additional expectations of this position:

- Analyze and interpret meteorological data gathered by surface and upper-air stations, satellites, and radar to prepare reports and forecasts for the public and other users.

- Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts involved with atmospheric transport/dispersion models and/or air quality studies.

- Collaborate routinely with other subject matter experts to provide the best products possible to customers.

- Provide meteorological support to customers on a 24/7/365 basis. Shift work is required, and extended hours may be required due to operational requirements. Some holiday and weekend work will be expected.

- Demonstrate a solid, operational understanding of Numerical Weather Prediction. Basic and applied meteorological research will also be expected.

- Prepare scientific reports, provide technical support, and assist with the development of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosive (CBRNE) effects models.

- Assist in developing, integrating, testing, verifying, validating, and applying CBRNE software based on the results of experiments, and predict phenomena based on their theoretical and computational methods.

Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:

- M.S. in Meteorology or related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.

- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a US DoD TS/SCI security clearance

DESIRED QUALIFICATION:

- Active Top Secret Clearance

- Ph.D. in Meteorology or related field

- Applicants with strong, balanced backgrounds in both operational and research meteorology
