Position Description:
Reporting to the company's Chief Scientific Officer, incumbent will take a leading role in defining the scientific strategy underlying the development of the Exelixis pipeline of both small molecules and biotherapeutics. This encompasses identification of emerging research areas with opportunity for novel therapeutics discovery, specific target identification and prioritization, and triaging of partnering opportunities. through both an understanding of the scientific literature and engagement with external experts. Candidates will have significant scientific expertise and will have achieved recognition for their original research in oncology.

Position Requirements:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Responsibility for surveying and synthesizing scientific and competitive data to further develop an innovative scientific strategy for Exelixis discovery and partnering activities
• Stay abreast of developments in the external scientific community through networking activities, including representing the company at scientific conferences.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with academic institutions and KOLs.
• Define and grow areas of strategic focus in alignment with the company's objectives.
• Advance potential opportunities via internal discussions, identifying and engaging appropriate external experts, developing recommendations, and presenting findings to senior management.
• In partnership with the CSO, develop presentations for the company's Board of Directors.
• Act as a primary driver in the successful execution of the company's research strategy, including providing direct and/or transitional leadership to any partnered programs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• May supervise Ph.D. level researchers

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
Education:
• Ph.D. in molecular/cellular biology or immunology

Experience:
• A minimum of 10 years of experience post PhD, oncology research focus required
• Experience with or exposure to translational research is preferred
• Recognized as having made significant contributions to oncology research as demonstrated by publications and invitations to speak or chair sessions at major conferences

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Highly developed scientific analytical skills, able to critically assess, integrate and synthesize broad areas of scientific research from diverse sources to develop specific recommendations.
• Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and on cross-functional teams.
• Ability to use broad expertise and to develop scientific strategies, company objectives and principles, and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with key external stakeholders and potential stakeholders
• Strong interpersonal, influencing, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills
