Position Summary:

Eye surgeons, stem cell researchers, geneticists, infectious disease specialists and engineers are working on technologies and treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, corneal disease and cataracts as well as a vaccine to prevent eye and genital herpes infections. These efforts have vaulted UC Irvine School of Medicine into the top echelons of U.S. institutions receiving National Institutes of Health grants for vision research. Our goal is to spark innovation and continue to revolutionize patient care.

The Research Administrator position will provide support mainly for pre-award activities of our active research faculty. In consultation with principal investigator (PI), prepare budgets and budget justifications for proposed research projects. Research and incorporate appropriate payroll, travel, equipment and computing costs, ensuring compliance with University and agency policies and procedures. Advise PIs regarding proper justification of research and non-research costs so that anticipated award amount will be sufficient to maintain adequate support levels. Work with PIs to resolve any anticipated unallowable costs. Audit all budgetary and anticipated expense transactions in proposal, ensure that such transactions are within University, Federal or other agency guidelines. Assist with the preparation of financial and/or progress reports requested by agencies for award continuation and/or final reports. Coordinates extramural funding proposals through the UCI approval structure and assure compliance with regulatory agencies. Maintains comprehensive files on all pending, funded or denied extramural proposals. Assists faculty in the processing of protocols and maintains protocol files and tracks details. Assist with other duties and projects, as needed.

Required:

3-5 years of relevant experience Proficient knowledge in field of sponsored research and research administration with strong accounting skills. Basic knowledge of governmental regulations Experience working in an academic medical setting. Experience with financial, purchasing, personnel, and payroll systems. Strong computer skills using MS Office Suite, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines. Knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc. Ability to manage a high volume of transactions. Ability to perform moderately complex financial analysis and customized reporting. Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports. Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization; communication skills; and a customer service focus. Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration. Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles. Knowledge of grant funding processes, procedures and techniques. Writing skills to draft persuasive text for variety of audiences.
