DESCRIPTION

The Specialist Series academic will provide long-term research projects support to Dr. Kalpna Gupta s laboratory:

We are seeking motivated applicants who have a bachelor s or higher degree(s) in molecular biology, engineering, biology, chemistry, or related field. Candidates should have a record of completed undergraduate or graduate research that can be directly applied to the field of interest described above. Laboratory experience is required. The successful candidate must have a broad range of skills, including the ability to maintain effective interactions and collaborations with other members of the lab and scientific community. Ability to maintain the laboratory notebook and record of acquired data and to follow written and verbal directions is essential.

Consult with Principal Investigator, academic researchers, and/or postdoctoral scholars on the nature and general plan of approach to basic research problems; perform a wide-variety of standard repetitive but highly specialized experimental procedures at the full operational or journey level and techniques required for research projects; perform a limited variety of non-standard laboratory and experimental procedures requiring ingenuity, resourcefulness, and adaptability to special and changing needs of research; carry out in vivo and in vitro experiments based on specified projects including breeding transgenic mouse models for sickle cell disease and cancer with testing for pain behaviors, phenotyping for sickle Hb and examining new targeted therapies, genetic, and molecular biology techniques; modify, vary, or adapt standard procedures to meet the needs of research projects or improve tests that are unsatisfactory, and, after studying available literature, analyze and alter conditions under which determinations are made; participate in collaborative projects and/or project development activities involving multidisciplinary staff, by modifying, varying, or adapting standard procedures to meet project needs; assist Principal Investigator, academic researchers, and/or postdoctoral scholars with data collection and analysis, preparation of data for presentation and publication; and contribute to the completion of research project goals.

Assist with daily laboratory flow, experiments, procedures and maintenance: ordering lab supplies and reagents, placing orders both on a routine and urgent basis, stocking and organizing the laboratory, and requesting equipment repairs/calibration as needed; request purchase requisitions with the Division Office when supplies are needed, ensure purchases are made and received, and provide packing slips for financial reconciliation; work with any student staff members working in the lab on any given project; may assist with training for new staff members on the techniques used by the lab to ensure adequate quality control; report to Principal Investigator of any issues related to equipment, supplies, or biosafety concerns; engage frequently with internal and external contacts on specific projects or subjects.

Provide laboratory animals management: assist with the routine maintenance of the laboratory s mouse colon; correspond/communication with ULAR staff as needed; coordinate rodent imports and ordering; assist with maintenance of genetic mouse strains, breeding, phenotyping and genotyping.

The Specialist Series academic will also be encouraged to attend and present the results of their research at scientific conferences, participate in study meetings and interact with collaborative research groups; mentor and work with graduate and undergraduate students; develop and pursue their own research ideas; as well as develop and polish any skills and experiences that they feel will best prepare them for their career goals.

Candidates in the Junior Specialist Rank should possess a B.S/B.A degree or equivalent research experience. Those in the Assistant Rank should possess a Master s degree, or 5 years of experience. Appointees to the Associate Rank should possess a Master s degree or 5-10 years of experience. Appointees in the Full Specialist rank should possess a terminal degree, or 10 years of relevant experience
