Departmental Overview

The Student Parent Center, as part of the Independent Student Programs sub cluster within the Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence provides individualized services for student parents that supports their transition to the university, academic achievement, retention, graduation, and advancement toward career goals. Undergraduate and graduate parenting students often come from underrepresented, low income, first generation college student backgrounds, and also tend to pursue higher education later in life. Many of these pathways and lived experiences can increase the likelihood of experiencing personal and academic challenges while completing degree programs. Services within the Student Parent Center include direct holistic academic counseling focused on a range of issues that include accommodations for pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting; accessing campus-based child care services and family housing; financial aid counseling, and assistance with verifying and documenting eligibility for social services such as Medi-Cal, Cal Fresh, CalWorks, subsidized child care, affordable housing, etc. The Student Parent Center works to address academic and non-academic barriers--both personal and institutional--that impact student access, inclusion, retention, and academic success.

Responsibilities

* Provides general academic, personal, financial, and career counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to "at risk" undergraduate and graduate student parents who often come from low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented communities and who regularly access higher education later in life.

* Supports the Program Coordinator by maintaining a caseload of student parents from pre-admission outreach through preparation for post-graduation transition to employment and/or graduate school providing holistic academic counseling. This includes assistance with academic accommodations for pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting, accessing campus and community-based child care services, securing affordable family housing, maximizing financial aid, accessing social services, developing problem solving, self-management, and academic skills, and working with the Program Coordinator to respond to academic or family-related crises.

* Supports the Program Coordinator with Child Care Access Means Parents In School (CCAMPIS) federal grant by identifying students with dependents and determining the ages of their children, assessing their immediate and long-range childcare needs (to reach graduation), and securing available options.

* Facilitates group discussion sessions, co-facilitates academic and personal development seminars/courses, and assists with training and oversight of graduate and undergraduate social welfare field work interns and paraprofessional staff.

* Works with campus departments, faculty, and staff advisors to resolve specific student parent access barriers and academic accommodation issues.

* Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

* Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.

* Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement.

* Knowledge of trends and issues facing student parents in higher education, particularly from low-income, first-generation, underrepresented backgrounds, and those who access higher education later in life.

* Knowledge of and experience with analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of low income and underrepresented student parents.

* Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.

* Experience working with single parent students, expectant and new parents, and student families from historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities, first generation college students, and students who access higher education later in life.

* Experience planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops.

* Knowledge of and experience with conflict management and intervention strategies.

Education

* Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

* Knowledge of or the ability to quickly develop an understanding of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.

Other Information

This is a full-time, 40-hr per week (100% time), three years Contract position.
