JOB SUMMARY

  • Reports to the Practice Manager and works under the direction of the Clinical Supervisor and Office Supervisor. Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performs various clerical and patient care duties. Responsibilities include assisting the physician in support of medical care, phlebotomy, answering the telephone, admitting and discharging patients, and performing data entry.

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS



  • Education and Experience
    o The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent; successful completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program or equivalent work experience with successful completion of the Certification Exam. Previous medical office experience and the ability to speak and write Spanish are desired. High emphasis on phlebotomy experience.

    1. Demonstrates knowledge of and competency in performing patient care procedures, observations, treatments and techniques utilized by facility.
    2. Requires ability to perform vena puncture.
    3. Demonstrates high level of interpersonal and communication skills necessary to consistently receive and greet visitors, clients, and staff members in a professional manner.
    4. Demonstrates well developed communication skills to communicate effectively and clearly to a variety of internal and external contacts.
    5. Requires knowledge of office procedures and computer skills.
    6. Demonstrates analytical skills necessary to solve patient problems and interpret data.
    7. Promotes collaboration and innovation in the clinical services to ensure an interdisciplinary approach to improving health care delivery and the quality of patient care.
    8. Requires ability to perform EKG's and other procedures applicable to the practice.

    Working Conditions
    0. Works in a physician office environment.
    1. May require lifting or positioning of patients.
    2. Flexible hours and work schedule required.


    Physical Demands
    o Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.


    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
    The below statements are intended to describe the essential job functions and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by the personnel occupying this position.
    1. Performs routine clerical duties in accordance with established policies and procedures by:


  • Receiving and greeting all patients and visitors in a professional manner and providing all reasonable assistance.

  • Receiving telephone calls, taking and relaying messages accurately.

  • Obtaining information from the patient to accurately establish the patient's electronic medical record

  • Maintaining patient files, charts, and records.
    2. Performs patient care duties as directed by the physician or nurse by:

  • Recording medical history.

  • Preparing patient for examination.

  • Assisting physician and/or nurse with minor emergency or surgical procedures.

  • Performing routine laboratory and EKG tests as ordered and collecting specimens for the lab.

  • Administering and recording medication and injections as ordered.

  • Interpreting physician's instructions to patients and providing instruction to patients.

  • Checking and maintaining supply of stock to exam rooms.

  • Cleaning and sterilizing instruments and equipment.

  • Scheduling office or hospital procedures.

  • Arranging referrals and/or pre-certification to facilitate quality patient care and service.

  • Triaging patient calls to determine urgency and direct patient care.

  • Managing and adjusting medication dosage under the direction of a physician and following up on patient compliance.

  • Managing patient refills and ensuring that medications are dosed correctly and patient is taking them according to provider instructions.

  • Preloading patient information into the EMR- including diagnostic testing, health maintenance, medications, and past surgical history.
    3. Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
