Job Description:

Commercial Banking (CB) provides a full range of services including lending, treasury services, investment banking, commercial card and asset management products to meet its clients' domestic and international financial needs. CB's 1,900 bankers serve approximately 17,000 clients nationally, including corporations, municipalities, financial institutions and not-for-profit entities, with annual revenue generally ranging from $20 million to $2 billion, and nearly 34,000 real estate clients, owners and investors. CB is the third largest commercial bank in the U.S., with over $200 billion in loans and $170 billion in deposits.

Team Overview

CB Strategy is a dedicated internal strategy consulting team. We launch, design, and incubate critical strategy and business transformation efforts throughout the business, with the ultimate goal of improving our clients' experiences, as well as Commercial Banking's operating and financial performance. Typical projects are commissioned by senior C-suite executives and focus on solving the bank's most urgent strategy, business development, process reengineering, and organizational design needs. CB Strategy also plays an integral role in helping formulate and articulate CEO-level communications for events like JPMC Investor Day or JPMC Operating Committee (OC) Strategy Offsite.

The team is comprised of experts across management consulting and investment banking able to deploy flexible problem solving strategies from traditional hypothesis-driven approach to design thinking and rapid prototyping. Typical project teams are comprised of 2-5 team members, often in partnership with business resources, and range from 4-16 weeks in length, depending on complexity and scope.

CB Strategy is structured as an independent functional area within CB. The Head of CB Strategy is a member of the CB Operating Committee and reports directly to the CB CEO.

Role Overview

This role represents an excellent opportunity for qualified candidates to:


  • Own and drive workstreams on strategy consulting engagements
  • Lead strategic thinking and approach, quickly identifying most critical aspects of problem and most appropriate framework and structure on your workstreams
  • Help manage project team priorities, including creating work plans and helping direct work of junior team members
  • Plan and run interview campaigns, war rooms, and focus groups with key CB executives and firmwide senior stakeholders
  • Be an objective thought partner to client stakeholders
  • Develop senior client presentations to influence change, and drive impact and action
  • Mentor junior team members who actively seek advice / guidance
  • Engage in broader team efforts, including recruiting, staffing / deployment decisions, and performance management

Typical Projects

  • Assess new markets for expansion and establish go-to-market strategy
  • Evaluate product gaps to develop new products or feature functionality
  • Establish new FinTech partnerships
  • Refine client segmentation and / or client coverage models
  • Research new trends or entrants to evaluate changes to overarching strategy
  • Assess operating models for optimization opportunities, including redesign or automation
  • Support the development of new data and analytics models or strategies
  • Support creation of CEO-level executive communications

Work experience and required capabilities

  • MBA or an advanced business degree from a top-tier program is strongly preferred
  • 2-5 years of experience with a premier strategy consulting firm or an internal strategy consulting / corporate strategy team
  • Demonstrated experience with consulting toolkit / broad range of analytical tools and problem-solving approaches
  • Strong client management and executive-level communication skills
  • Track record of demonstrating a high level of personal initiative, setting and achieving challenging goals, and demonstrating entrepreneurial leadership
  • Experience in financial services industry preferred
